Yesterday evening I needed to move a bit under £3k from my Santander account to another account to pay a bill due today. Tried to do it - said it exceeds my payment limit!!
What?? I'd moved £4k to the exact same account in May. Why is my limit now £2k?
Thought I'd now have to spend ages on the phone to them, but found you can simply increase the limit online. Usual 2FA with a code to mobile. Easy. Then went to made the payment. Exact same 2FA to same mobile.
So what's the point? It seems totally pointless if you can simply increase the limit using the exact same authentication method as making the payment itself!
Checked my wife's account and it was the same, a £2k payment limit. Have they done this to everyone? We checked our emails - had nothing notifying us of this new limit.

£2000 usually applies to debit card payments

Customer Services recently told me that the limit for debit card payments is £50K.

Just checked my mistake the limit only applies to faster payments.but you can change that through App or online banking.didn’t see any mention on debit card payments limit.Payments over £25000 Can made through Telephone or branch

I thought they'd changed it to £5k, but then I'm old, but I know it caught me out too.

Absolutely ridiculous to change the transfer limit to below your normal usage and not tell you. Its like sticking their foot out when you're walking past.
Yup. It may be a good idea to have a payment limit. But to set a limit without telling you, and which you can change using the exact same authentication method as the making the payment itself, is just utterly useless. If they're going to have a payment limit that the account holder can set, firstly tell them about it, secondly use some different route to allow customers to change it than the normal authentication route for payments.
I'm sure some customers would welcome this facility if properly informed and implemented.

Thanks Zagfles, they've changed mine to £2000 too, it can't have been done long ago because I often send more than that from my Santander account. It's back at £25000 now, I'll have to keep an eye on it to see if it changes again.

I first found about this mid April23, the payment limit only applies for online and mobile banking and Santander say " it let's you the customer control how much you can send from your account in one transaction from your personal accounts"

Payments made on your card, in branch (if can actually find one), by telephone banking aren't included.

Every time you change your limit you get sent an email,

Now I'm aware of this new function and if I want to keep accounts with Santander it is what it is

Ah this is like BA, if you change your seating arrangement they send you an email to tell you what you've done, if they change your seating arrangement they keep it secret! Anyhow, I changed limit a couple of days ago and no email yet.

It limits how much  a scammer/ hacker can transfer out of your account , to the limit you have set.

Read stories of people losing thousands to a hacker or someone who conned their bank details from them?

A hacker would need to gain access to your account to transfer money to his account. If he had that access, he could reset the limit to the maximum before transferring the money.
