Santander pointless online payment limit

Yesterday evening I needed to move a bit under £3k from my Santander account to another account to pay a bill due today. Tried to do it - said it exceeds my payment limit!!
What?? I'd moved £4k to the exact same account in May. Why is my limit now £2k?
Thought I'd now have to spend ages on the phone to them, but found you can simply increase the limit online. Usual 2FA with a code to mobile. Easy. Then went to made the payment. Exact same 2FA to same mobile.
So what's the point? It seems totally pointless if you can simply increase the limit using the exact same authentication method as making the payment itself!
Checked my wife's account and it was the same, a £2k payment limit. Have they done this to everyone? We checked our emails - had nothing notifying us of this new limit.

I'm sure I recall it being mentioned on here a few months ago but can't find the relevant thread(s), although came across this in a wider search:

Can't disagree about the lack of rigour with which it's been implemented!

Nope. Just checked mine. Still £25,000.
  • You should be able to change it in the mobile app.

  • They seem to have changed something else too, for every payment I make to another bank (my account) I'm now having to get a one time passcode.

Fair enough it is for my own security but its a little annoying when I'm only moving small amounts.

Don't remember agreeing to this either.

As you say, it's a security measure. You don't get to agree or disagree.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

I noticed that my payment limit had changed, but I do not remember how. Perhaps I tried to make a payment over the new limit. I changed it back to £25K on 17th June. I do not believe that it is possible to set it higher than that.

    Should be told first though.
  • Someone on another thread posted that the max Santander setting is £25K but you can make multiple payments up to £100K.
  • Overzealous and ineffective security measures seems to be the name of the game for banking these days. Don't get me wrong, I do understand the need for it all, but when Santander requires that I confirm I want to make a payment to my own account 7 times in a row my answer isn't going to be any different on the 8th confirmation page.

Checked my payment limit and it seems to be set to 2k, although I'd not paid it much attention before as I don't use Santander as a main account. Have upped it anyway for when I'll need to move some savings through in future, would have been a bit annoying to only find out about it when attempting to make the transaction but I guess not a huge deal.
    Moo…

I thought they'd changed it to £5k, but then I'm old, but I know it caught me out too.

Absolutely ridiculous to change the transfer limit to below your normal usage and not tell you. Its like sticking their foot out when you're walking past.
