Ha ha - you'd be surprised!  A friend with a knitting granny expressed her preference for bright colours, and easy on/easy off modern designs in  machine washable yarns.  She got classic matinee style baby clothes - all white pure wool with umpteen buttons, and the promise of more to come once she knew she needed to buy pink or blue wool.

OP, are your family verging on being alcoholics? Sounds like alcohol is important to them. Maybe suggest that everyone drinks a lot less. Being called boring for not drinking alcohol is pretty lame. I think Sapindus had a good suggestion, just tell her you are starting to try for a baby and want to be as safe as you can.
