Run Winsock fix light still amber.
The powerline adapter is a Solwise one. I've just been loaned them to try. Was debating getting some faster Netgear ones if these worked!
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
  • Which model of solwise is it?

Also, do you have internet connection on bot machines?

    They are PL-14PE.

  • Right! ok I am hazarding a guess that this is your problem. The way networking works is that you are as slow as your slowest link.

You have a connection at 100Mbps (your PC connected directly to the router)
You have a connection at 14Mbps (your laptop via the PL-14PE)

Think of it like a single lane road. Your Porsche PC is travelling at 100mph along the road , but your pc comes up to your laptop (a 40' wagon), travelling at 14mph. You have nowhere to go, so you have to slow to 14mph.

This is what is happening to your PC (the porsche). and because it cannot travel at it usual warp speed, it considers there is a problem and turns the light amber. The Laptop is travelling at maximum speed and therefore it doesn't consider it to be a problem, therefore light remains green.

Once the 40' wagon turns off, the porsche goes full speed again

I hope I am making sense?

I'm confused now, and the really bad news is that the laptop doesn't want to connect directly to the internet now. (I've been through all the vista diagnostic tools as it recommended them.)

  • Try rebooting the laptop

Done that. Laptop still won't connect. Is this a Vista problem? Even the built in diagnostics can't sort it out.

Further development - I've connected the Laptop through the router on Port 2 - now I have 2 amber lights but the internet is working on both machines.

  • run the command prompt as an administrator. You can use
start | accessories, locate command prompt, RIGHT click and choose Run as administrator

At the command prompt, type in the following:

    netsh int ip reset iplog.txt

Press enter, when the command prompt returns, reboot the laptop

Both lights are still amber. Is my Belkin router just not up to the job?

I give up for now - it's way past my bedtime.
Red Rose Exile - thank you very much for all your time and help.:A
