Belkin Router and Powerline adapters

I'd never heard of Powerline adapters until yesterday when a friend loaned me a pair so that I could connect my laptop to the internet without trailing wires all over the house. We tried a wireless network some time ago and gave up! I was delighted yesterday when I connected all the appropriate wires and it worked - no hassle, no mess - I couldn't believe it.:j
You can now imagine my dismay when I booted up the laptop today - no internet connection. The router is showing an amber light at Port one, which is connected to the original PC and a green light at port 2 which is connected to the powerline plug. At first I assumed there was a problem with the cable, but the lights don't change if I switch the cables around. I can only assume there is a problem between the PC and the router, but I do have internet access from said PC:confused:. It doesn't matter which port on the router the PC is connected to the light is amber.

Any ideas what's wrong anyone?

TIA
(BTW replies need to be aimed at a technology numpty:o.)

  • Try rebooting the router, by unplugging the power supply for 1 minute, then restarting it. There is a possibility that you are having a conflict of IP addresses that is confusing your router, that rebooting may cure

I've tried that! I've also rebooted the PC. Still got an amber light.
Throwing out of the window is looking a good option at the moment. I can't believe how easily it worked yesterday.

  • Try this then on the PC

    Go to start | run

Type in cmd and press enter

At the command prompt, type in the following:

    ipconfig /renew
    and press enter
    (note the space)

Give the router a couple of minutes to re-assign new IP addresses

  • If you temporarily disable the wireless by taking the adaptor out?, does the light go green,

It's not wireless - that hardly worked at all:rotfl:. But no whichever bits I unplug the wire from the PC to the router lights up amber.

Forget that - I just unplugged the wire from the router to the powerline plug and this time the PC light has gone green.

  • Are you on xp?

If so, download and run Winsock XP fix from here by installing and clicking FIX and then reboot your PC

    EDIT
    So both green now?
  • Ok so we are looking at a conflict with the powerline and the other network adaptor
