Santander SOs at weekends

For the first time ever, a standing order went out from my Santander 123 Lite account today, on a Sunday. I am not sure whether this is a change of policy or whether it was a mistake. The SO concerned has been in existence for several months, with a monthly frequency. One previous scheduled date for this SO fell on a Saturday and was, as expectted, executed on the following Monday. I had changed the amount for the SO only yesterday, but this shouldn't have triggered a payment on a non-banking day.Only reason I noticed that the money went out today is that I got a text from Santander, telling me my account had got overdrawn.

I can’t recall any announcement from Santander about a change of policy. Has anyone else heard or noticed anything about this?

I thought Santander were a rare exception in that they DID process SOs at weekends.
I'm also under the impression that they process future dated payments on a weekend and have set up a withdrawal payment from my easy access savings a/c for next Sunday.

I have been with Santander for over a decade. They never processed an SO on non-banking days until now.

    This is from their T&Cs:

I think future dated payments are different, they always get processed on the date specified. At least they did ever since Faster Payments came into being.

Seems I got this wrong, because the T&Cs suggest future dated payments are processed like SOs. Should be interesting to see when yours gets processed.

... don't know if I'm reading it correctly, is there a contradiction between these two T&C statements?

If an SO payment were due on e.g. (Monday) 18th September, the first statement suggests the CA needs to have the funds by 00:00 Monday, so that you can fund it on Sunday, but the second statement states the 'Working Day before' so Friday 15th.

If an SO payment were due on 17th September, as the payment is due on a non-working day, the industry 'standard' is to operate on a 'next working day' basis, however the cut-off time from the second statement suggests that's Friday to fund the recipient's account on Monday. I think without an 'at weekends and public holidays' statement the Santander statements are misleading and therefore can be challenged (obviously the account holder can incur an overdrawn charge), for reasons (i) a common situation for DDs and SOs to fall on a non-working day, and (ii) standard industry practice being next working day.

You raise a very important point friolento if the standard banking practice is changing.
  • Both my partner and I have Santander lite accounts and both had SOs go out this morning, when we thought they would go out on Monday.

A potential problem for me. I have opposing SOs between Lloyds and Santander on the 21st to satisfy various T&Cs
I have diarised Saturday 21st October as it will send me overdrawn as Lloyds don't process SOs on non business days

  • I've had my Yorkshire Building Society pay out yesterday and today. I don't often pay money out of my YBS accounts, and wasn't expecting them to be actioned on a weekend.  Is this a new one as well?

What date does it show for the payments though, today or tomorrow ?
It will be interesting to see what happens for 2nd October as I have loads of 1st of the month SOs going out much of which will be covered by my SP which credits around 10pm Sunday.

I've been using YBS for just over a year now and I've found they've always paid out on non-working days, though when I used to pay into my Christmas 2023 Regular Saver by recurring transfer from my One Day Account they would make internal transfers on Saturdays but not on a bank holiday Monday for some reason. I've previously made YBS internal transfers successfully on a Sunday. Whether this bank holiday exception would apply to faster payments I don't know since I haven't tried to make a faster payment to an external account on a bank holiday before.

It's not often I use SOs in general to be fair but I have found Nationwide sits somewhere in the middle though in that they pay out internal SOs on non-working days but external SOs will go out the next working day.
