When it was downstairs (& still cut out) it was a double socket so I assume it is still the same.  But as nothing has changed I suspect the connection hasn't.  But then we all know what assume does don't we!

Well the good news is the new phones are great.  The bad news I still lose the internet connection after the end of well so far the only call, which does not bode well.  We have now passed the 4th engineer visit.  Does anyone know what Gplus is??

As you've had 4 engineer visits, then I'm going to assume it's unlikely any advice will help you but here goes.

Before even calling an ISP, if you have a removable bottom half of the face plate on your master socket then I would remove that and plug the filter into the socket behind it (this removes any extension sockets from the phone line) and plug the phone into that same micro filter. If this fixes the issue then you have an internal problem & you are lucky they didn't find it as they would charge you for the engineer vists. I had a problem that this fixed, someone had installed a second master socket as a telephone extension in a bed room. I got rid of the extensions as I didn't use them anyway, but if you need them then you need to make sure every phone in the house has a filter attached (or the extension socket has one built in).

If the problem still occurs with the phone and broadband connected to the test socket in the master socket, and it occurs with different filters and different phones, then you likely have a problem outside your house. My phone line is a long aluminium wire that is insulated with paper and every time they dig to repair one, it causes another to fall apart. I switched to fibre a couple of years ago. If you are on ADSL and you can get fibre, then switching to fibre might fix it.

As phones will have to be plugged into your router by 2025 then the problem will go away by then anyway.

It is supposed to be happening before the end of this year here which is why I have been worrying about it so much as I have a nasty feeling that when we go I will lose either all phone or all internet.  I will get my DS to read what you have said.  What puzzles me is why it only started when we went from Halo 2 to 3.

I assume you got a new router, have they tried giving you a different one?

Yes we are on the third.  The last engineer says we need a Gplus engineer.  No idea what that is but I am trying to summon up the energy to do that tomorrow am.
