    Terms for £175

Any recent experience on having a FD account historically and snagging a fresh sign up bonus?
  • I only switched 3 weeks ago, oh well such is life.

About 6 months ago they paid me a switching bonus even though I had an HSBC account at the time. Can't say whether they check for historic FD accounts. It might be worth a punt if you have a burner account.
  • Just done the switch for our joint account...I'm more interested in the 7% linked savings account, as you can put in £300 a month (hope that means 2 savings accounts). Bonus if you win the £12.500!

Yep, had a mortgage with them pre 2010 and also a HSBC account this year (as part of my switch run) and pocketed the £175 from the switch to FD.
Aim: Be mortgage free at 50 years old - TARGET HIT 12TH OCTOBER!!
Current Status: Turned 50 in May 2023 - PAID OFF IN OCTOBER SO TARGET HIT!!

Money made from Bank Switching in 2023: £1,775 (target £1,600) - TARGET HIT!!
Money made for Mrs B via Bank Switching in 2023: £1,275 (target £1,250) - TARGET HIT!!

    Be mindful of that.
Due diligence, on these subforums, will tell you creating accounts that are given that term can and do get closed and lifetime bans slapped on you.

If you look at the folks who earned themselves a lifetime ban they did far more than just open a couple of burner accounts. It was many accounts in a very, very short space of time. You've got to work quite hard to get banned.

I've found you don't always have to work hard to get a lifetime ban.

Only the other day I received a lifetime ban from Metro bank, yet I've only ever had one current account with them (only started banking with them in January this year), which I've used as one of my nominated accounts for savings accounts. I've never even used them as a burner account, the most I've done that could possibly annoy them is bouncing a few high 4-figure sums through the account on their way to higher rates and ordering a chequebook.

Barclays closed all of my accounts last year, I believe the reason is because I held both a Barclays and TSB student account for about 30 mins on the day I opened the account. I had only banked with them for a few weeks when they closed the accounts, my other account activity consisted of opening a rainy day saver, depositing £5k in it, setting up 2 DDs on the account and ordering a chequebook.

Admittedly my LBG ban was as you describe, opening multiple short lived donor accounts amongst other things.

I suppose my point is that lifetime bans aren't always as clear cut as simply opening multiple burner accounts if my experiences with Barclays and Metro are anything to go by, they can be a result of a bank simply not liking the look of you for whatever reason so perhaps be careful.

Hehe. Maybe you are special or maybe Mr Lloyd is friends with Mrs Metro.
But, yes, your LGB ban was one that sticks in my mind.  :)
  • Wish they allowed existing customers to access thr competition instead of just switchers. The first direct interest rates (apart from the 7% interest saver) leave a lot to be desired. Furthermore, it’s most likely the cash will be coming from unethical sources anyway, seen as HSBC’s horrendous environmental record!
