Due to fly to Skiathos...

We are due to fly to Skiathos on 13th Septmber and have had this booked since May.
The last few days Skiathos has been subjected to a very bad storm and the whole island has had major flooding, Greece have declared a state of emergency.
We're booked on a package with TUI, who I have contacted this morning and said that all flights are scheduled to resume from tomorrow (not sure if that has changed since I spoke to them), but I have seen that Jet2 have cancelled all flights up until 12th September.

My concern is that even if the weather has returned to normal by the tim eof our holiday and flights resume normal service, the local are where we will be holidaying will still be severely impacted, with businesses shut etc. i.e. it's seeming most unlikely that by next week the place will have returned to normal operation.
We also have a 2 and 5 year old going with us and are concerned as to whether it will be safe.

What are our rights in this situation with TUI?

Absolutely none unless the FCO advise people not to travel to the island.
Have you looked online to see if your resort has even been affected. You find with these things its probably not as bad as the media make out.

Did TUI not cover your options when you spoke to them? They have published them.

Where have you seen that? (in bold)

We are in Skiathos now and it's been an awful time.
Torrential non-stop rain like we've never seen before for 36 hours, 24 hour of thunder and lightening.
The main street in Skiathos Town was under 6 inch of fast flowing water yesterday.
We watched police closing the coast road.

Some areas lost electricity, we've been fine.
Most places have no running water, including restaurants.
    Dreadful flooding in shops etc.

Today some places were open but very busy.
I think more places will be open tomorrow.
Weather today has been ok, cloudy & windy but little rain.

    Regarding the media:
It's pretty bad but we are not short of food (we are self catering), we have bought bread, tomatoes, cucumber, cheese etc.
Not the holiday we planned but you can't predict things like this.

You need to listen to what TUI tell you and offer you.

If flights are operating and the hotel is open and there's no government advice not to travel then you only have whatever TUI are prepared to offer you. If hotel facilities are closed then you might have grounds for some compensation but i don't think you'd be due anything just for businesses in the town being closed.

I do think TUI have an obligation to protect the safety of their customers so if there were genuine risks to small children that should be considered but again that probably only covers the flight and hotel and transfer not necessarily the entire resort.

A week is a long time in weather so fingers crossed things will be significantly back to normal and you can make the best of it.
  • The Times reporting 2 fatalities, 3 missing, a state of emergency declared and a police ban on vehicular traffic.
Jet2 have shown leadership in halting flights out with passengers to allow aircraft to return with holidaymakers already on the island.
It appears they have offered full refunds or rebooking options to those involved - meanwhile TUI are marking time with indecision.

Jet2 have cancelled fkights until 12 September.

The OP is going 13 th September so being with Jet2 wouldn't have made any difference at preent.
  • It'll be interesting to observe how Jet2 and TUI compare going forward.
  • We had similar once with wildfires in Greece, neighbouring hotel was evacuated. Ours was fine and no FCO advice. So we went and fortunately it was all fine in the end, a nerve wracking week in the lead up!

Jet2 have a very good record on customer service, I'm not sure the same can be said of TUI
