Yes I agree with what your OH says though you are drinking only half the fat if you dilute 50/50. You are also avoiding the treatments used to get skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, when I was a kid the cream/fat was just allowed to rise & then skimmed off the top, but I think it's a more intensive treatment nowadays.

I have compared the values in whole milk as to semi skimmed milk.....the fat in whole was not quite double that of semi....so to my mind, diluting it would make semi less fatty than normal.
I did find that diluted full tasted creamier.....I used 1 pint water to 1 pint milk.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
I use half milk/half water and to me it tastes no different to semi skimmed. I like the idea of carrying and paying half!!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Fab
Thanks all - will defo try that as we go through a lot of milk, especially because we go through lots of milk.
Right sorry - OH has just popped in to put in another 2p worth he says "it is not just the fat but the loss of protein on dilution".
Just went to the kitchen and checked the skimmed and semi-skimmed cartons - both have 3.4g/100ml protein and 5g/100ml carb, the difference is in the fat content. So I guess full fat probably has the same protein so if you are diluting it you are diluting the protein content (and vitamin content).
I guess if like me you drink it for the taste and not really the nutrition then it doesn't really matter, or just to put in tea and coffee. But might be important if getting the kids to drink it.
How did we ever get on to this line of discussion? haha
Lol.

yes, already been said (this thread or another?
) that its not a good idea to dilute milk for kids, they do need whole milk

Forgive me Fishcake Random but I'm a bit lost.
What is your definition of living for free?I looked at your old posts to find your previous thread and couldn't help but notice that you are on the hunt for big home appliances for around £500 on the "In my home" board and have Sky.
Is your challenge just to not live beyond your means??? If that's the case then the thread title's a bit misleading surely.
Good luck with cutting back though.0 -
Good luck to you Fishcake for giving this a go:T I will be following your progress...
For others wanting to live for less or cut back, I have notice over on the DFW board there is a challange for living on £4000 per year after all essential expenses paid, this might be useful for some folks over here.Rebel No 220 -
hello hello,
Tis day 2. And all is well. Had a long day a work with lots of goodies I had 4 free bottles of iron bru, 14 newspapers, 6 magazines (3 from papers) a small box of choccys, 4 mini packs of biccys and a paper party hat lol. I also had £5 tips. We munched the biccys and the chocs as a mini lunch as we didnt have time to eat propally because the shop was so busy this afternoon.
OH has a horrible cold poor thing so when we got home we curled up in bed and put on a film. He soon nodded off and i`m gonna cook a pizza and garlic bread for dinner (his fave) from the freezer.so day 2 and nothing spent off to a good start.
Someone mentioned about the household appliences and sky, in our current flat we have all white good included but our new flat only has a cooker. A kindly uncle has offered to buy us the fridge freezer as a joint moving home/ engagement present so thats all sorted. And we have been given £300 for christmas from our parents towards the washer/dryer, sooooo it won`t actually effect our spending, I did check out the local launderette prices to see which was better and the prices were astrinomical so we decided to ask for money towards one for xmas. As for sky, again this was a present we had our first 3 months free with only line rental through a referal scheme and the dish was already on the flat when we moved in so again not really a big coster. However it was on a 12 month contract and I need to find out if its cheaper to cancel it and pay the charges or change the account to the cheapest option avalible for the next 7 odd months. I`ll keep you posted.
Kind regards
Fishcake
