Well, it's Xmas eve here in Aus, and I'm off to work in a bit.

I work in a games store, and am astonished at how much people are spending on their kids. The average is about $400 (200 quid). Here we do know how much goes on credit, since at the checkout with a card you choose cheque, savings or credit. I don't ask "cheque, savings or credit?" at the checkout anymore, just "credit?".

Consumer credit is known as the Anglo-Saxon disease. Other countries do have it as well, just nowhere near as bad...

  • We did the Christmas food shop on Friday, Tesco was surprisingly quiet & we got almost everything we wanted without being run over or killed by rampaging [STRIKE]nutters[/STRIKE] shoppers, we forgot the Christmas pudding so I'll probably pop in early in the morning & grab one before the last mad dash starts.

DH dragged me out shopping on Friday round town. We must have looked a right odd family with us walking around- me saying "Why are we here? We don't need anything."
Him saying "I just want a look around." Then saying to the kids "Ooh what about this or that?"
They then look at me who says "Do you need it or would you like to wait 3 days and see what you get for Christmas- espescially as you've both JUST had your birthdays?"
They kept just putting stuff down and walking off.
After about 1/2 an hour I told DH that I was going home as it was cold and I had to work the night shift.
He felt really hard done by as we had only bought one thing and that was his present of a pair of slippers from my sister.
Such a load of tosh for one day. It'll be Christmassy tomorrow when we go to church- espescially when the vicar asks what very special boy was born at this time of year and DD shouts out "DS!"
Anyway, I have had a chance to unleash my Christmas grinch now so thankyou!

  • This HAS to be the funniest thread I have ever read on here. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing my sentiment - and here I was thinking that I'm the only same person on the planet who realises that xmas is a load of commercialised tosh!
  • I was in Scotlands newest shopping centre on Saturday, feeling kinda proud of mysel cos i'M doing NYKMEDIA's 4K a year challenge starting on Jan 1st and I wasnt spending for the sake of........and the stores, now this shopping centre only opened in October obviously to cash in on the Christmas spendfest, were changing their windows to SALE windows........now Ive been pretty sensible this year but my immediate reaction was.......THEYRE TAKIN THE PI... !!!!!

And yes, if I was totally sensible Id have Christmas on the 28th Dec after buying all my gifts in the sales....

  • According to Radio 2, the sales actually start online TOMORROW! Yup all the big chains, M&S, Debenhams, Amazon etc all start flogging half price stuff on Christmas day...how mad/sad is that?

We can't even have Christmas day as a non spender now.

Still....in true MSE style...think of the bargains you could find for next Xmas. :rotfl:
