  • Eon Next definitely do variable DD as I changed mine last autumn. As soon as my bill is online I pay it off before the DD due date

Eon Next do offer variable DD, but I believe most of their fixed price tariffs require a fixed DD. Which is a bit annoying

If you have smart meters there is always the option to switch to prepayment, the govn has been conned into paying for subsidies on the rates, the new rates yet to be announced so worth keeping an eye out for that and seeing if it is cheaper... certainly safer than letting corrupt energy companies have your bank details.

Following carefully because this is what I wanted to ask.
I haven't asked EDF directly but along with something else I've been dealing with I've asked twice about VDD and not received an answer either time.

Yes to Eon Next offering variable DD but this is certainly not conditional on having a fixed price tariff.  Nothing on the Eon Next community forums suggest that you need a fixed tariff for VDD.

I myself have been on monthly VDD on both variable and fixed tariffs this last year (Next Flex and Loyalty v4).

I think you may have confused what I said. Having a fixed DD is a condition of some of their fixed price tariffs. Others have the option of VDD.

For example, my tariff requires a fixed DD, as well as other conditions such as having a smart meter

Well so far Eon has confirmed that they allow variable DDs and hasn't said that they are only for certain tariffs.  But they also haven't managed to give me an accurate fix DD quote for moving to a new tariff when my current fix expires in a few weeks.

They keep saying "we can't use your actual use for the last year because we need to include a buffer to help you budget".  The amount they are quoting (when it hasn't included blatant errors) is about 10% higher than what I figure it might be but they won't supply any calculations to show what they want me to pay.  And then they waffle about how getting a lower quote from an alternative supplier may be inaccurate so I should make sure that I get a quote using my actual use!!!

Doesn't that illustrate how ridiculous the whole situation is? You must have a smart meter, which allows them to read your exact usage at any time, yet they also insist you have to pay a fixed amount that is not linked to your usage.
