Thought I would put this here as an indicator of passport renewal time-scales as of August 2023 in case people are concerned how long it may take.

UK passport holder, last one expired 2002. Did an online renewal application 3rd August, sent my old passport off on 7th August, new passport received 16th August and old passport received back on 18th August! Have to say it was all a little unexpected...

Not saying everyone will have the same result but in terms on money-saving I cannot see I would have been any better paying more for the 'speedier' service.

  • That is really helpful!

We have just got back from holiday and my sons (childs) passport expires in January 24, he is going to Italy with school in October this year, he needs 3 clear months left on his passport (he was out by 4 days).

We sent his old passport off yesterday (signed for) and did the application online the night we got back from holiday. So I am hoping it gets done quickly and returned, as he will have a new passport number, which the school need.

I really didn't want to pay more than double and have to book an appointment to collect it, so fingers crossed it arrives within the next couple of weeks!

    Thanks,
    Bizzy

Hopefully will be as quick as mine - in the short time I was waiting I received multiple emails giving me the progress - we have received your application, we have received your old passport, your new passport is being printed etc as well as many more so every step seems to be notified to you, you can also check the progress online, despite all the complaints a few months back for me at least it worked very well, so good luck, be interesting to know your experience.

We renewed our passports earlier in the year.  One took 7 days from receipt at the Passport Office, the other 10 days.

Mine was one of those that went very wrong. (August 2023)

After printing and passing to the courier... it took 19 days to get to me.

(I have a normal house, with a normal letter box in an easy to reach location, near a medium-sized town.)

It was a very bad and stressful experience. I no longer trust that my data has not been breached. See my summary at the end in this:
