I wonder if they're trialling it on serial non payers, would make sense.

I have never not paid, always pay straight away.   So no.

thanks for the heads up. i will not be making offers if i have to pay up front.

i did a quick search on the ebay forums and one complaint was it can apparently take upto 15days to get a refund if your offer is rejected.
That's not how it works. You do not pay anything "up front".

If your offer is Accepted, then the payment is taken at that point (which is really no different from paying for an accepted offer now, and, as a buyer, is actually more convenient to my way of thinking). If the offer is Rejected, then no payment is taken, so there is never a case of needing to get a "refund" .
Yeah its no different from an accepted offer now if you pay - but many people seem to like to go fishing with offers and then decide if they were actually serious and want to pay after they see if it will be accepted. That's the people that will be inconvenienced by this change.

I can across this on Monday when buying a bottle of perfume, I picked my offer price and filled in Paypal payment.
Now the payment did not show on my bank account until this morning, and I am talking even the hanging balance.  It did show on Paypal account.  I was nearly caught out with my online banking, thinking why have I more money than I should?
That sounds like an issue with PayPal, nothing to do with eBay.

I've had a few people make or accept offers and not pay immediately but then come good - but if they haven't paid within 24 hours generally they're not paying.

I wonder sometimes if accepting an offer straight off makes people think they've paid too much? But on the other hand quite often a counter offer just gets ignored and you lose the sale.

Other than that I think it's just people buying stuff online seem to have a level of entitlement and selfishness that isn't really conducive to a nice smooth selling process.
I have been reading this thread with interest.  I am a buyer, never sold anything on eBay.  After losing 6 stone in weight :) most of my clothes went to charity and I’m in the process of gradually replacing them.   I’ve looked at hundreds of items for auction and sometimes get a bit carried away and bid on a lot at once then find I’ve won all the bids.   It never occurred to me to not pay (seriously :D) and I didn’t realise it was a relative problem.  I’m wondering if one reason for non payment is the buyers simply bid on too many items at the same time and win a lot of auctions can’t afford to pay. Am I being a bit naïve?

Some buyers think ebay is like tesco.
They don't realise there is a seller on the other end of the transaction or they just presume the seller is a massive company rather than one person trying to do a couple of hours a day on ebay after work.

I've messaged plenty of buyers after not receiving payments following an accepted offer.  Most don't reply at all but I've had plenty of messages telling me they had another offer accepted first, or got a lower offer accepted from another seller.
I've also had buyers (after I've accepted an offer) try to haggle down further,  one even told me they had sent more lower offers to other sellers for the same item and would pay for mine if they all turned her down!

In case you're casting nastertiums, my eBay feedback page gives a count of 1,729 which spans several years, including 100% over the past 12 months.

I made 4 offers  to a single seller last night , and they were all accepted without requiring immediate payment. Went immediately into my purchase history to pay and found the seller had automatically discounted the postage and I paid. Items are being shipped this morning.

I've since tried a couple of offers and not been asked for payment details, so perhaps it was a seller setting or a trial.
  • Well I had a buyer two days ago that placed an offer. I rejected. He placed another slightly higher offer. I accepted. Then he didnt pay and a day later 'told' me to cancel the sale!
Now I have to wait for the next FVF discount day to relist it.
    Annoying!

This is why I don't do offers in your way. If someone makes an acceptable offer I reply that I will reduce the selling price on the listing accordingly. That way you are not tied to that buyer only. On occasion a completely different buyer will hit the BIN.
