Talking of switching off router at night I do this when I am not on internet and have not had any problems.  However VM now tells me as from October my landline will be digital and they will send me a thingy to use with it.  Does that mean that I will have to leave router on otherwise landline will not work?

    Thanks

If the thingy they send you plugs into your VM hub then yes, you will need it powered to have a working phone.

I dont know how VM will do it so you have to wait and see what you get but AFAIK the adapter plugs into the VM Hub and your phone plugs into the adapter, so you need to keep your hub powered 24/7 - look it up on the VM website.

BT Digital voice can operate in several modes, with a Digital Voice handset with the router acting like a DECT base station, via a device that plugs into a mains socket into which you can plug a normal phone or by plugging your phone directly into the back of the BT hub.

Vodafone hubs, need an adapter which converts the BT connector on the phone to the RJ connector on the VF hub

Why do all these companies insist on calling the router a hub?

Because they are not just doing routing, they are multifunction - modem, router, switch, firewall, WiFi access point, DECT basestation, analogue telephone adaptor, file server etc it's only in the domestic or SME market that this all gets lumped together. In networking, a router has a very specific function.
