    Hello

I *really* need to be able to turn off any internet access from my teenage son's devices overnight. If this means turning off internet access for the whole family thats OK (not ideal, but ok.)

I have tried a timer plug to turn the router off over night. But it seems to totally mess up the power to the router. I tried a 'fing' device but my son has, somehow, managed to get around it.

How can I turn off the internet from say, 1030pm - 630am? (short of physically unplugging it every day?)

I use plusnet, if it makes a difference?

    Thank you.

PS Please, no comments about how my son should learn to self regulate. He is unable to do this for many reasons.

Sorry no intention to offend I should have read all of your post first.  I wonder if spec savers are having a sale?
  • A lot of internet routers have the option to set time limits either for all devices or specific ones, suggest you log onto the router and have a look.
Alternatively change the password to the router to a new random one when you want to cut off access, you'll have to turn off WPS on the router to ensure it can't be connected to by pressing the physical button on the router.

Or disconnect the DSL via the router settings each evening (doing this can mess up the speed of your internet connection though)

My daughters dad used to limit her WiFi on her  ipad before she had a phone. She worked out if she started watching a movie before the wifi went off she could keep watching to the end.  They always find ways around. I never limited them at my house.

Depending on how old they are, also consider they could buy a wifi dongle or hotspot from a phone if determined enough

My daughter had this problem with her son, even setting limits on access etc were thwarted by him resetting the router and changing the password.

She solved it by disconnecting the router and taking it to work or taking it into her room overnight with her until he learned the rules.

He lost the privilege of using the internet when he got home from school as well because she had the router with her until she got home. It took about a week and a few tantrums before he came into line because he had to admit to his mates why he couldn't communicate with them until later in the evenings.

Likewise my other daughter makes her kids (13 and 16) hand their phones over at bedtime and they get them back in the mornings.

Its not difficult to tame a defiant youngster. Lay down the rules and sanction them if they break them, even if it creates a bit of inconvenience in the short term

I don't know if you're still looking for help in this but how does he connect to the router? If it's WiFi is it possible to disable WiFi in the device itself? Can you not just confiscate the device overnight in fact?

Don't mention burner phones to your other daughter :)

For the OP it may not be quite that simple given their final paragraph.

Interestingly my daughter has been working with "difficult" children for the past 20 years or so and she is of the opinion that most if not all can be taught how to behave and accept rules, however both sanctions and rewards are necessary as well as consistency.

She also has the caveat that many of them revert when they are at home over the weekend or even worse when they come back after school holidays as they are quite often ignored or allowed to get away with their behavioural "issues" when back at home.

The whole learning process starts again on a Monday morning when they come back.

However this isn't the forum to discuss this - if the OP can't control internet usage, then shut it off until the behaviour changes, there really isn't any other way.

Both the Plusnet Hub1 & Hub2 have access control where individual devices or complete access can be turned off.  Obviously they need to ensure the router can not be accessed both over the air and physically to ensure this is a viable solution.
