Oh my god, so glad I found this thread! I bought various bras in my local store and online, and four of them didn't fit so I took them back. I hadn't got the receipt with me so I thought I'd just get a a credit note as I shop there a lot. The assistant was really shocked that I was bringing back four bras and demanded to know where they were bought. I couldn't remember which were online and which were from the store, so I said they were all from the store. So then she says they'll have to ring the store to check! It was the attitude really like many people say on here, at this point I was panicking and thought do I say "or they might have been online", I didn't want to look like I was lying. By this point I said I'd take them back and find the receipt but she said they needed to check they were stolen from that store. She then called over the manager who thank the lord just said "yeah that's fine" and I got my credit voucher. I know they have to be careful as people pick stick up and get the credit for it but I just stood there wondering if I was ever going to get out without being taken out the back and cross questioned.0

My wife just took a Cardigan back that I bought her for Christmas. It was £35.00 and I was asked if I'd prefer a gift receipt. I said yes without giving it much thought tbh. My wife didn't like the item and took it back. She was told that she could only have a credit note for £20.00 as the item was now reduced in the sale and she only had a gift receipt. What kind of scam is that? If I'd known that could happen I wouldn't have accepted the gift receipt in the first place. Shame on M & S and another lost customer.:mad:0

You usually get a regular receipt too with the actual purchase price so can you not take it back with that one?The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -

I thought the gift receipt was to prove time/amount of purchase without the recipient knowing the cost? That's terrible, maybe she was served by someone who wasn't clear on the process?0 -
My mum who turned 80 this year brought me a wash bag from M&S it came with a very small bottle of aftershave and some sort or moisturising cream. She asked for a gift receipt which they kindly gave her.
I 've gone back to the M&S store to return the item only to be told that because of the small aftershave and the moisturising cream could have been tampered with they will not take it back.
Surely if they are willing to give you a gift receipt that means that have agree a contact that the item can be returned if it's in original condition. Which it is. Since my mother was give the gift receipt she had no reason to believe this cannot be returned had she been made aware she would not have brought it.0 -

There is a date on the gift receipt, if you return it within the date you will be refunded the price that was paid for the item, that is the purpose of the gift receipt. The date for returns was extended a couple of months ago to a date in January. It may be that you purchased it before the extended date was in effect, then an item returned after the thirty five days would be refunded with a credit note, the value would be the latest selling price.0 -

Thanks for the reply. The item was brought on the 18th December by my mum. at M&S store (not the one I tried to take it back to) . Well with in there gift receipt time. They will neither refund exchange or credit note. to be honest they should be just refunding. They will not as they say the items with in the bag cold have been tampered with. I understand there reasoning but they should have told that to mum when she brought the product and not give her a gift receipt. As far as I'm concerned once they gave her the gift receipt they are agreeing to take the item back as long as it's in the original condition which it is. They have mislead my mum, they should never have lead her to believe the item could be returned
Are M&S in such dyer straights they have to resort to trying to get out of refunding people. Sad to see a old establish company resort to this!!0 -
Took loads of stuff back to M&S - never had a problem - mind you I am always polite and have witnessed some real bombastic so and so's who come in demanding a refund being rude from the get go and then wonder why the staff aren't kissing their backsides ... M&S do get more of their fair share of people trying it on (pardon the pun) bringing back "as new" stuff they bought years ago or stuff they've worn for a wedding.

The gift receipt gives you the same rights as the original purchaser, which in this case would only entitle you to a remedy if the item is faulty.0 -
I was given M&S toiletries for Christmas - with a gift receipt - the giver (DH), knowing my pickiness, had checked that such items could be returned. The assistant raised no objection, smiled and gave me a credit note. If the item couldn't be returned, there would surely have been no point in offering a gift receipt. Perhaps the OP should try again. Good luck.0
