@YoungBlueEyes The only debt we have is the mortgage and our savings now are higher than the deposit we saved to buy our place. Every month I've been employed since buying the flat I've added to our savings and every bonus I get goes straight to the savings too.

@MeteredOut I told her what I think the possibilities are but she prefers to leave the finances up to me.

@Herzlos fair point. I know saving a couple of quid by going to Sainsburys isn't going to make much difference in the grand scheme of things. I don't think she minded going to Sainsbury's as such, it's not far away at all and the alternative would have been standing for another 5 minutes on the concourse waiting for the train. It's more her knowing my mentality of doing whatever it takes to get things as cheap as possible.

@ebodman1985 we have shared ownership in the UK but we get over the maximum income allowed for that.
  • Since I started this thread it's come to light that a house that's down the same street sold at the end of June for £562k and it looks like it's a bigger house.

I've done some more digging about what's changed about the house since they bought it in 2016. On the listing there are no photos for the cellar, one of the bedrooms and one of the bathrooms so it's possible these were in bad condition when they bought it.

They've replaced the conservatory with an orangery.

They've put in a new kitchen and bathroom and I would speculate the 2nd bathroom is also new.

It also looks like they've modernised the other rooms of the house except one of the bedrooms which looks the same.

The house also looked more empty than it did previously but that's hardly surprising given they previously managed to fit all their belongings in a 1 bed flat smaller than mine.

I've also looked at all the sold prices in that town since 2005 and this is the most expensive sold price out of everything that's been sold since then. The 2nd most expensive sold for £850k last year and looks much more substantial and was reported in the local newspaper as a rare opportunity to buy such a significant property.

One final point is that the asking price was £950k so whoever bought it paid £25k over the asking price.
  • @MeteredOut you've seen the property details, don't you agree something doesn't add up here?

I have no interest in the prices of specific properties other than those in the locality of where I live or where I might want to buy. A house is worth what someone pays for it. It could be worth double or half 2 weeks later if they have to sell and there's shortage of buyers.

What doesn't add up to me is your seeming obsession with this specific house because it was bought/sold by someone you know.

This is now bordering on stalking. Goodness only knows what the poor innocent "friend" would feel if they happened to stumble across it - pure unadulterated terror, quite possibly!

The thread is doing nobody - least of all the OP - any good.

  • @MeteredOut I always look up how much people I know buy/sell their properties for if I can. I do sometimes question how they can afford it such as a teacher I know buying somewhere for £390k on her own. The prices though generally make sense except for this one which is totally baffling.

@RelievedSheff it's difficult when I'm left out of a world I want to be in

@EssexHebridean I've deliberately not mentioned the town in case he's on here as I'm aware there's probably nobody else originally from Leeds living there and I may be the only person he knows from his area of Leeds living in London. I see in your signature that you were mortgage free in 2016 and have just taken one out again, what was your strategy behind that?
  • @MarkGlasses In that case you should probably know, it's not that difficult to find given the detailed price information in this thread.
Never take a stranger's advice. Never let a friend fool you twice.
  • This is absolutely top trolling from the OP…
15 pages and people are still biting!

Definitely one of the best efforts I’ve seen lately.
