I never let the client watch me work, if I do i deliberately do it the wrong way. or tell them the wrong way! I learnt my trade, and it took 6 years, and poor money, and im still learning after 20 years. so why should they pick up your tips and tricks...
You'd never get a job in my house then! I have a lot of respect for tradespeople's skills but when working in my house, on my money I watch what's being done. It's also how I judge if I will have someone back again, it's all well and good to see the finished product and be impressed, but if you don't see how that was achieved I don't think you can make a sound judgement.0 -

You wouldnt get a tradesman wanting to return!!
To me when a customer is standing over you, Its like he doesnt trust you to do a good job, I have had this only once over the last 10 years and put a stop to it within a few hours. £180/day sounds expensive! I am in London too and haven't paid more than £150/day and I have been pleased with the work. Also never a good idea to get a day rate. A fixed price for a job is much better as then they are motivated to do the job quicker.0

My bro in law earns £80k a year for 9-5, with co car, expenses and no skill or trade to speak of. He gets 4 weeks a year paid hols, pension and even sick pay.
£180 per day..... c'mon if this guy is self employed, he should get £300.

Ah, that's where you are wrong I am afraid. I have had many tradesmen (plasterers, electricians, gas engineers) come back and do more work for me.
I work in the IT industry and customers are always watching over me, I do not object, at the end of the day I am working on their equipment that contains their data, same as a tradesman is working on my house. I think if a tradesman objects it is more likely that they have something to hide.0 -

I did a bathroom last year where i had to work in a locked room just to be able to get on with the job!
From a proffesional point of view my insurance does not cover bystanders, for example if i was using my nail gun while im wearing protective PPE and one was to hit you am i at fault?
If you want to learn a new trade give up you job and get a apprenticeship!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -

Personally I have no objection to a periodic "here's another cup of tea how are you getting on?" visit. Its when peeps stand over you the whole day that gets my goat. It isn't necessary - I always explain what I am going to be doing that day and why. I'm with Andy. YOU get in MY way and SLOW me down if you do that. Theres nothing worse in any job (don't care what it is) than having someone breathing down your neck all the time. Have you ever considered the actual cost to you of doing it?I work in the IT industry and customers are always watching over me, I do not object, at the end of the day I am working on their equipment that contains their data,...same as a tradesman is working on my house.I think if a tradesman objects it is more likely that they have something to hide.

I don't know if you read my post but I have no interest in learning any of your trades, I actually admire what skilled tradesmen do especially as I have no skills in any of your areas, in the same way I expect that you would not want to learn my trade.0
