Daily rate for carpenters

We live in London and need a carpenter to fit wardrobes in bedroom - lot of levelling and cutting to size to be done.

We have been quoted £180 per day which seems excessive. This guy comes highly recommended but... Is this the going rate?

  • If he is a very skilled carpenter, and you are paying him direct, then this is about right.

It all depends on how long he will take to do the wardrobes... should be about one a day (excluding decoration).

    Hi

I live in Devon and the going rate here is around £100.00 per day plus vat. To pay CIH will reduce this but of course I would never recomment doing that!

    Hi,
I also live in Devon, and £110 a day is about right, although Ive heard of some charging £150 a day..Personally I charge £110...I'd say in London, that would be about right

I would say £180 a day is about right, especially as he is highly reccommended, just remember you could employ someone cheaper and regret your decision if he mucks the job up, better to pay a little extra and get a good job.

BTW make sure he does work for the required (I assume) 8 hours though.

For London £180 a day is VFM (especially as he has been recommended). Most carpenters in the London area charge £200+ per day.

Thanks everyone - its good to know that we are not being ripped off. We have booked him and hopefully it will all be great.

We got a couple of quotes and you could tell he was a trained carpenter and not a general builder by the suggestions he made about coping with various odd corners etc.

Now, what is the going rate for a painter and decorator in London because that is what we will need next.

    Thanks

Well where I am in Devon, they Painters and Decorators charge anything from £140-£170 a day...so I reckon it would be upwards of £170-£200 a day..

Ironically (compared with Devon, at least) the P&D's in London are on a lot less than the Carpenters...

    About £90-100 (ex. materials).

Of course, you MUST set them specific goals and check up on their work. They have a tendency to.. er... enjoy tea breaks. I ended up finishing my flat on my own because I was fed up with paying decorators and coming back to a virtually unchanged flat.
