  • I ran a dummy quote earlier this month after reading so many posts are here. I'm still being quoted on a par with last years.

    Make £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

    Make £2024 in 2024...

You seem to be the only one on here unaffected by the hike in prices over the last year.
The quote above is from the article if you bothered to read it.
Fact, car insurance has increased over the last year to record highs.

    https://news.sky.com/story/why-has-the-price-of-car-insurance-gone-up-so-much-12910284

May's data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) saw motor insurance far outstripping overall inflation - at 43.1% compared to 8.7%.
The fact that a spotty 20-something journalist cannot remember higher cost car insurance does not qualify it being a “record high”.
Silly comment about a journalist you don`t even know.

So the ONS is wrong and you are right?

Post a copy of your £93 quote for a six cylinder Merc.

    As you requested
That could be a quote for anything.
Let`s see the insurance company and the vehicle etc. on the quote.

Are you going to share a privacy notice before I share my personal data with you? 🙄

My wife’s insurance actually went down by almost 25% this year, so as a family we are net savers despite the increased costs of “average” car insurance. Clearly that kind of message does not sell well on social media, so it’s not in the interest of the media to explain that - amongst the clearly huge and possibly devastating increases for some people - there are still winners and losers.

And as already explained, over my last 35 years of driving the cost of motor insurance is not at a “record high” right now.

I hope this helps you find cheaper car insurance...  :D
  • My multi-car policy is renewing in 6 weeks … I’ve checked when my current insurer invited me to renew last year and it was about a week before renewal. Why? Because the best premiums are offered to those deemed less risk who plan to renew at least 28 days before renewal (algorithms are built on claims of higher risk drivers who leave everything to the last minute supposedly which seems plausible). Can’t believe this is allowed because a week out from renewal any new providers will also deem you higher risk and you’ll be more likely to stay with your current provider as the price difference will be smaller. Any thoughts?
That is also a problem when you buy a car you would want to insure it on the same day. Costing more!

Please note that at no point during this work was the kettle ever put out of commission and no chavs were harmed during the making of this post.

Thanks for the above, obviously fake but at least you`ve given us a good laugh.
Does the car have an engine or just pedals.

Stop being rude, it has a three litre straight six engine as you can clearly see from the quote.

It was one of the last of the 12 valve engines - so only 180bhp, slow by modern standards and presumably it's why the insurance is so cheap.

It has always been cheap to insure - but I guess it's not the kind of car bought by the racing "yoof".

I have spent less than £2,000 on the car in the last 13 years in terms of maintenance and upkeep.  The value has appreciated by more than that in that time, so true MSE.

A £93 insurance renewal is the icing on the cake for me.

As for spouting random articles from the media, you should be aware that the media makes its money from clickbait these days - all those clicks to articles where "insurance companies are stealing your children, electric vehicles will set fire to your hair, the government are now trying to [insert wild claim here]".

By believing mis-reported and mis-quoted media drivel over people who are genuinely saving money, by claiming "oh woe is my everyone is paying £££££££ more for insurance this year without fail" and calling other MSE members liars, you are deliberately and dishonestly discouraging people from shopping around for insurance, making sure their details (car, value, mileage, usage, job title, etc) are all up to date.

Yes, car insurance is expensive, and for the average person may be rising - but not everybody is average, you should try everything, and by the way it was a lot pricier if you bother to check back more than 12 months...

And yes - switch to a classic Mercedes Benz and you may get your insurance for £93.75 this year, like me.

The ONS just publishes statistics and car insurance has gone up by 43.1% in the past year.
    Their figures not the medias.

Look on the bright side with your old jalopy, you soon won`t need a MOT or road tax, if it shugs on for another five years.

    Yes, that's the plan.

I imported it when I came back from Spain so it has zero rust.

Originally cost 9 million pesetas... I have the original bill of sale.  £46,000 or thereabouts - that's £157,000 in today's money.  They apparently threw in a free MW/FM radio.

At the last MoT (no advisories) the tester showed me that - despite not having or needing a cat - it was producing less CO and HC, sufficient to pass the emissions test for a Euro 2 petrol with a catalytic converter.

Climate control runs cold, the little things like the air vent controls which light up at night are a nice touch.  Memory seats make it handy when swapping between myself and my wife.  Only issue is that it is a true four seater - despite its width, it doesn't have a fifth seatbelt in the rear / middle.
