I did like Fuse's answer to the "are you financially secure?" question - pretty much said we'll be ok because we have a big pot of cash from venture capitalists.

And as everyone knows, VC-funded businesses never fail?

Wish a lot more would go bust. Then they’d have to nationalise all energy. Until then keep getting ripped off.

Go back to an even less efficient and more expensive system than we have at the moment? No thanks.

How would that work when there is a process in place to ensure no one loses their supply of electricity and gas? If the Government wants to re-nationalise energy supply then it, or more precisely we the consumers, would have to buy out the shareholders of all the energy suppliers at 'above' market value. Why 'above' - simply because immediately the market knows that there is a potential buyer, the value of shares goes up.

Last year, the French Government paid EDF shareholders £8.5Bn to buy the remaining 16% of EDF Energy that it did not already own.

What evidence do you actually have that we are getting 'ripped off'? Shell Energy Retail UK is currently looking for a buyer for its UK energy supply and broadband service because of market losses.

By way of a comparison, re-nationalising the rail operators is easy. All the Government has to do is wait until an operating contract comes to an end and then agree a price for the transfer of rolling stock.

  • Anybody here remember EBICO and First Utility (or Futility as they ended up being called at the end) ? No standing charge companies. I was with them. Frugal single occupier. Bingo. They should have charged me a bit more, I'd have paid it and they'd still be in business.

    STANDING CHARGE IS A CON.

Aside, if I'm on BG standard variable tariff does anyone think I'll have a nightmare just moving electricity to Fuse ????

As more home renewables have been installed, it quickly became clear that zero standing charge tariffs had no future. Every customer comes with a business cost and supporting consumers with PV solar for example getting zero bills for 6 to 9 months was an unsustainable business model.

Why would you have a nightmare moving to Fuse? Whether you will be happy with their customer service; billing and smart meter technical support is an unknown.

Just because you don't understand something doesn't make it a con.

DOB used for credit check but it does not mean you have to give the correct one - but you do have to recall the false one sometimes as a security check if talking on phone. You can get a quote on the phone without an app or giving out any more info than postcode but the saving on the s/c is very small so probably not worth the hassle of changing (when there is a good chance of the company you are leaving making up readings in their favour and refusing to change them).

I thought this was a thread about data protection and asking for your date of birth - why have standing charges suddenly been introduced into the discussion?

Maybe partly due to Fuse discounting approx 20% off average electricity standing charge as apparent alternative to account credit switch incentive.
