PHONE INSURANCE - Is their an alterantive to your provider

1) Why not be careful?
2) You can buy a cheap pay as go phone in an emergency.
3) I lost my contract phone with Orange this week and had no insurance. They wanted £70 to replace a 6230. I do not think that is too bad.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
I'm afraid I think phone insurance is a rip off. Left my phone in pub one night and they wouldn't pay (which to be honest isn't that surprising). I would do as has been suggested and keep an old one for emergencies and live without the new one until contract renewal time.0

One suggestion which has already been made is to cover it on your house contents insurance. There is no extra premium required, but check your excess.
Also if you have a Gold Service account with Lloyds TSB they give you cover free of charge up to £90.

I'm going to check, but I think my mobile is covered under my housing contents. I think this would be only the unit, not “air time abuse”.
So, being about to move back onto a contract, I am a little concerned about what happens re. air time fraud / usage if my phone was stolen.
Does anyone know what the legal position is / Orange's policy? I sort of assume it's similar to credit cards, i.e. if you report it lost / stolen quickly, there is no or limited liability?
Secondly, does anyone know if Orange can put a "cap" on your monthly spend, i.e. I'm never going to legitimately spend over £100 / £200 per month and that would clearly limit any risk if the phone was stolen.
Insurance wise I have credit card (ccp), travel, home content and I'm sure a few others. I'm loath to pay that industry more ... surely I must have cover (I'll check).

Check your home contents insurance and you should find you have cover for your mobile. You will have to pay an excess to your insurer but this is less than you would pay to the phone company for their insurance.
If your mobile gets stolen you are not liable for its use once you have reported it. As an added precaution you can set some phones to lock after a fixed time of non-use. You then need to enter a PIN before you use the phone again. Anyone taking your phone won't be able to access it.
I read some time ago that you can put a limit on monthly usage but don't have any information.
