If the computer your installing windows 11 Pro on has ever had Windows on it will auto activate anyway and it doesn't really matter if its activated or not it will still work

Not sure about office 2021 however libreoffie is free and is incredibly similar to  office

Windows 10/11 can be downloaded freely from Microsoft onto a bootable USB stock
But not "Pro,"... . If the device was originally "home"
I have updated from 10 home to 11 pro with no issues whatsoever
For free? I think that's what is being discussed.
    Correct on both counts
Your reply doesn't make any sense at all. There was only one 'count'; whether you can do an in-place upgrade to Windows 11 Pro using the existing Windows 10 Home licence.
That would only work if your device had Windows 10 Pro installed at some point.

No - I have 10 Pro (upgraded from 10 home) on my old laptop and was wondering whether I could somehow use this installation key to upgrade  from 11 home  to 11 pro on the new device ?
Presumably - I can't just use it to upgrade from 11 home to 11 pro - without having to go through 10 ?
Do you have an installation key? Why not try it? It won't bite you.

    Step 2 to Step 4.

I can't find the key - it is not held in Office 2019 and when I use magical jelly bean - it gives me the previous 2017 key - what's going on ?

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

How is an Office 2019 key related to upgrading from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro( as you requested)?
  • I want to upgrade my Win 11 home laptop to Win 11 Professional - is it possible to do this using an "in place" upgrade ?
    ie) Without affecting ANY files
What's the cheapest way of doing it ?

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

the way to do it is to go to Settings / system / activation and enter a new product key - which will be a Pro key

it will then simply reboot and you will have Pro

the absolute cheapest way of doing it is to enter the generic Pro key provided by Microsoft (Google it) which will convert your system to Pro but it will not activate as it is free. You will get the watermark and you will not be able to use Personalisation (*) but otherwise it will act exactly as a Pro system

(*) the workaround is a personalized your desktop before you enter the generic Pro key

The second cheapest is probably to buy a cheapo key from eBay or wherever

Note: you might want to find and make a note of your Home key before you enter a Pro key in case you want to revert

    Sorry I was being dozy
It's too late to extract the key from my old SSD
It's been removed from my old laptop

My original win 11 home key appears to be a generic key because it wouldn't let me reinstall 11 home using it
I have no idea what MSI do but it is not a normal key!!

Major system Builders have OEM Keys, they don't use retail keys.

You typically restore an image from the recovery partition and the key installation is part of that process. You could typically then do an in-place upgrade to Windows Pro.

Not done the in version upgrade route for a few years now, but believe you can use a retail Key to upgrade.

If you (re)install Windows 11 Home on a laptop that came with Windows 11 Home, you don't need to be entering any product keys.

If you think you need to be entering a product key on Windows 11 setup on an empty laptop then you're doing something wrong.
  • Use either YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7 or TX9XD-98N7V-6WMQ6-BX7FG-H8Q99 to install Win 11 Home it won't active Win 11.
Connect to the internet and if you have a digital licence it should then be activated.
