Would you go/trust a garage that avoid paying tax????

    I think the conversation goes like this. 

    It will be £100. 

    Is that including labour and vat?

    Yes if you are paying in cash. 

    I put 2 and 2 together and assume that is what they are doing.

    Credit costs money - you are assuming they are not paying/avoiding tax.
    It doesn't cost enough money to justify a discount of more than a few percent.

    I left my car at a body shop once for some paint work after they had quoted a price. Went back next to collect car and when I whipped out my debit card the guy then said "oh I'll have to add on VAT if you're paying by card."

    No where on the original quote did it say anything about cash price or price + VAT.

    Needless to say I walked to the ATM half a mile down the road to get the cash and later that day I reported them to HMRC.

    Go into any of those foreign run men’s hairdressers / car wash places etc etc and the only thing they will accept is cash.

    So you turned 'em in for not paying VAT, yet you were happy to not pay VAT yourself.

    Visa, Mastercard etc. accepted
