Just called a few garages for quotation on repair.

'we can do it for £xxx if you are paying cash'

Which in way it is not my issue on how they run their business. Their Google review are decent. I'm sure they are good macantics.

But would it put you off?

The more tax they evade, the more the rest of us have to pay.

If they are willing to defraud HMRC, how likely are they likely to defraud their customers?

It is surprising (or perhaps not) how many small businesses are willing to give discounts for cash
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Asking for payment in cash is not tax avoidance.

If they said that over the phone & were implying you weren't to be charged VAT they are asking for trouble, you could have been anyone.  It could just be that they pay their bills & employees in cash & it costs to draw from a bank for a business.

Credit costs money - you are assuming they are not paying/avoiding tax.

You’re right. It’s either perfectly legal, if he declares it, or tax EVASION if he doesn’t.

Asking for cash - as against just accepting - is bound to attract suspicion.
