This year's TV or last years - samsung

I want to get the best value for money, in simple terms which TV is the better buy? We watch a fair amount of sports so trying to get away from the lag on a ball for example:
Samsung 75" QN800B Neo qled 8k or Samsung 75" Q60C qled 4k

Many thanks from someone who hasn't a clue!!

    2022 Samsung 75" QN800B £1800 John Lewis
    vs
    2023 Samsung 75" Q60C £1700 JL

That the later model year is cheaper implies it's a lower spec display / performance as the current year models always command a premium price.

The first set is 8k UHD vs 4k UHD but what have you got to watch in 8k now or in the near future??  That set is also very energy hungry as a result of the increased pixel count.

The outgoing year sets when discounted to clear are often a bargain but won't hang around for long if any good.  Check out technical reviews/user accounts of the contenders on places like avforums and other review sites?

It's been a long time since I experienced any lag or trails etc on sports action on my TV's.
Personally I would go for the 4k one with a decent soundbar/system. There isn't and won't be much 8K content before buying your next tv and this one and by then things will have moved on.

The lag on sports programming could be due to the way the set is set up with Samsungs ridiculous over processed picture.

There's excellent advice on avforums about how to set up the TV to give a good picture although the QLed displays will always be a bit bright and slightly lacking in contrast

I have Samsung QLED's and an OLED LG (slightly older) and don't find any problem with the contrast on the QLED, but, as you say it needs calibrating correctly. The OLED is great for pure blacks but not too bright, but, the new QLED's etc are near enough not to be noticeable unless side by side and the brightness is much better.
Went to a relatives last week and they had a new Samsung that looked horrendous. They had it on the store setting with the colours at full blast, they actually thought it was how a new TV should be.

OLEDs have gotten much brighter in recent years and so the gap at both ends is closing.

It would appear thar tv channels can't keep up with advances in TV technology

How many programs are broadcast in 4k ? Is there any programs broadcast in 8k?

Is there any content available in 8k (anybody know?)

I have a 12 year old samsung fhd telly which I refuse to change until it dies , maybe by then 4k programmes might be the norm, probably be 32k tvs available by then!

Less and less people are watching linear TV now. Plenty of 4K content out there just not where you've been watching for the last 86 years....

How bright is the room you are watching it in? Does it have sunlight going directly onto the screen?

That is the only circumstance I would consider a QLED, when you need the retina burning brightness to combat sunlight.

Outside of that OLED or MLED is a far better choice as QLED still struggles to to dark blacks very well and is a poorer technology. Add to that the lack of Dolby Vision on Samsungs and you are buying a compromise TV for no real benefit.

2012 saw the launch of both 4k and 8k tellys and 16k tellys have existed since 2019

Still think tv companies are keeping up with advances in TV technology?
