    Mortgage now at £74298!

I got £350 in as overpayment.  Would like to get it under 74k for next month if possible. The daily interest is so high that it feels like one step forward two steps back lol.

I've also attended a few Pilates classes online (free) and taken up teaching another weekly regular class. Not quite with the splits but we're getting there.

    Goals for the coming month:

    1. Get the mortgage below 74K
    2. Attend at least one Reformer class
    3. Limit the food shop to twice a week. The way I end up popping in to the small Tesco for "bits" every day! It's so expensive!

    One year anniversary!

I did it: I got the mortgage down over 10K in the past 12 months. It's now £73,695. I'm so excited.

But it's time for a side quest. I had to wipe out my savings again to pay for a trip home and a vet bill. Paltry EF is back to £11. So I'm putting the mortgage overpayments on hold until I can build the EF to £3000. Can I do that by the end of 2024? Watch this space.

Hi everyone, hope you've had a good month.

A busy month with some unexpected expenses, including trip abroad to see family. But saved £250 so the EF is underway.

  • Congrats on paying off the loan and making such a great dent on your mortgage.

I have a love-hate relationship with my EF too.  It must be hard for you that trips home have such a big impact. I am relatively lucky that my EF covers car stuff, insurance renewals to be paid in one and 'stuff' so it doesn't take too much of a hit too often.
I just have to compare now me to old me and feel proud that there is an emergency fund rather than just bags of debt and no space on credit cards to manage emergencies

Total Debt May 21 £20,490.44  DEBT FREE DATE 29/7/22

    Mortgage balance May 21 £177,096.19. Now £143,070.41
Mortgage free date. At start of sole mortgage = July 2042

2024 SAVINGS FOCUS - get rid of the car finance. £12,706.25  PAID OFF
2025 Savings Focus - 33.3/33.3/33.3 split; savings for house renovations (bathrooms/garden/kitchen; whichever collapses first), save for a family holiday (probably our last one!) and paydown/offset the mortgage. Total pot = £4238.56

    September update!

I've worked a lot this summer. Feeling a bit tired but getting closer to the goals.

    Mortgage now at £73220.
Emergency fund at £1192. As soon as it hits £3000 I'll get back to throwing all extra money at the overpaying the mortgage.

    And got the splits!

    Happy October 😊

Mortgage is at £72916. Look how little it goes down without overpayment.

Savings is at £1583. I could have saved more tbh but I spent about £150 on some back-to-school clothes and shoes. Still have the goal of saving £3000 by the end of the year.

    Goals for October:

    1. Bring own food and snacks so no spending anything when I go to teach on campus.
    2. Spend some time with a friend/friends at least once per week (work has been taking over)

    Happy November.

It's been lovely and mild here.

    Mortgage is now £72526.
Emergency fund is £1534--it took  hit because of MOT repairs but at least that's paid. I'm still hoping to get it to £3000 by the end of the year. I'll see whether I could sell something on ebay.

I've been better about bringing food to work, although there is still a fair amount of coffee-buying that happens. Much of that is social connection with colleagues and students.

I actually had a bad patch last month, exhaustion and stress. I took a couple of days off and talked to people so I feel better now.

My job is paying for me to do a course for an advanced diploma, which will hopefully lead to a 10K raise when I finish it next year.

    Goals for November:
    1. Track food costs--just keep a tally on how much is actually going on treats or small shops.
    2. See what I can sell on ebay.
    3. Get outside for health! Short days means that lunch breaks need to be outside. At least 15 minutes of daylight per day.
