I created a guide here a few years ago with regards to how to create a free account at pbxes.org to make your PBX with various SIP trunks and rules that determine which SIP provider numbers go through so to speak for both inbound and outbound calls

We effectively use it as a PAYG thing and it costs £0/month. The base station is also PoE and we've got a Yealink DECT IP phone
Hi please can you put a link to your guide. Thanks
    Stephen
  • @Stuart_W did you end up using A&A or did you find anything cheaper/better?

My long standing 'landline' number is currently part of my broadband package with Vodafone FTTP.  I'm looking at moving the broadband to Toob who don't offer a phone line as part of their package.  We never use the 'landline' number but want to hold on to it for a little longer until we're sure it's not being used by anyone.

With A&A am I right in thinking it would be £12 porting fee and then £1.44 per month ongoing?  It will only be for incoming calls so there shouldn't be any call charges.

I will be joining a&a next week and my number should be ported from Plusnet.
Those are the charges I am expecting.

Do A&A have an app so you can receive the calls via a mobile, or do you still need to plug in a handset somewhere?

A&A don't have an app, but there are ones like Bria or Voiper you can use. Alternatively, you would need either a SIP phone, or a SIP Gateway (ATA) which would allow a traditional phone to be used.
I'm using them for an inbound line and only pay £1.44

    Perfect, thank you.
  • New to VOIP (ish)

Currently have BT who I am ditching in January.
I have fibre broadband from Quickline. What do i need to port my BT number to a VOIP ?
I have my BT handsets so I assume I can use those.

Any advice on how to and providers for a small use service would be appreciated

You need to choose a VOIP provider, Vonage, A&A etc, then arrange for the number to be ported. Assuming your phones are analogue, you will need an ATA to continue using them, Vonage supply this. Or replace them with compatible IP phones.
  • Having read all the advice and comments I am still confused. I have broadband and a land line with talk talk that is an all inclusive £29 pm ish.
I am moving because I've given up on talk talks lack of connection and service (and I am informed they are dissolving one way or another very soon)
My land line if virtually redundant mainly just spam callers so I was intending to ditch it with my new provider whose BB fee does not include a landline and just use my mobile to receive and make calls..
However my friend claims she has a home phone that plugs into her modem/router and works fine at no extra cost over her BB monthly, is this possible ?
If any of the above makes sense or nonsense, all advice is greatly received.

The new way that ISP's provide a landline service (aka Digital Voice) is via a port on the broadband router, the phones plugs in there as your friend describes. Some providers may offer that with no monthly charge, I think Vodafone do, not aware of anyone else that does
