Just been approved as Foster Carers.

Options
My wife and I have just been approved.
Yayy Go Us.
After a 6 month slog which we thought would never come to an end we are now ready for our first child.
Yes, it is very close to Christmas but even if they phoned us at midnight on Christmas Eve we would still say yes to the placement.
We cannot wait to be parents once more and give a child a safe home whilst whatever problems they might have are being sorted.

Anyone other foster carers out there willing to give me some tips?

It is so good to hear that they are not making it too easy for people to foster even though they are desperate for places for all the kids.

Well done you for going for it a fantastic thing to do. Congrats for getting through it.

IMO With all kids you have to set boundaries and keep them. No matter what happens you must be consistent.
I always remember my mum had a system whereby if we asked for something if she said no, then it wasn't happening, if she said yes, great it was happening, if she said maybe then shut up and don't whine or it would quickly become a no! We really knew where we stood and I have brought my 3 up on this as well.

    Good luck to you.

  • Congratulations!

We have been fostering for two years now, it took us 18 frustrating months to get approved, but we are so glad we perservered.
Some advice, go to all the training sessions, not only do you learn how to do your job effectively, its a great way to meet other carers. Use your support groups, I find these informative and a great way to share a problem. Use your supporting social worker, mine is absolutely fantastic. We have a great relationship and I really value her friendship and support. Sometimes things won't go your way, you will get frustrated with the system, but hang on in there. Make your experience a positive one by being open and honest with all involved with the child, question things if you are unsure.
This is the most rewarding and demanding job I have ever had to do, but I wouldn't change it for the world. I know that I have made a huge difference to a child's life, given them a better start in life and hopefully have set them on the right path in life.

    Good luck!

Congratulations, it seems strange to have such a long process when there are children who urgently need foster parents, but they obviously have extremely high standards which you have met :D I'm sure you and OH will do a great job x
