BT LIne Rental Saver - no longer available after end July?

I received email today from BT@updates.bt.com, titled Driven from template, with the following info. I am unable to find any other info to corroborate it so asking if anyone else has received similar.

We wrote to you recently as your current Line Rental Saver product is due to expire on . If you’d like to renew this for another 12 months you’ll need to give us a call on 0800 800 150. You have until the 21 July 2023 to do so. After this date, unfortunately, you’ll no longer be able to renew it or have the option to pay for a year’s line rental in advance.

Why are we removing Line Rental Saver?

We’re constantly reviewing the products and services we offer to make sure we’re keeping things simple and offering you the best value. In recent years we’ve made changes to combine our broadband and line rental packages, bringing them together into simplified bundles with one combined price. Because of this, Line Rental Saver no longer reflects the way we charge for our products, which we understand may have been confusing, so we’ve made the decision to remove it from sale.

What happens next?

Even though you’ll still be able to benefit from your current Line Rental Saver product until it expires, for the reasons above, we also want to give you something extra back. We’re going to apply a credit to your account, which you’ll see on your next bill.

The value of the credit will be based on how long you’ve had Line Rental Saver on your account, this will be at least £10.

You don’t need to do anything; we’ll automatically apply the credit to your account and nothing else will change with your package. If you’ve recently renewed, don’t worry, Line Rental Saver will remain on your account until your expiry date in 2024.

Don’t forget, you can always visit bt.com/mybt where you can check your products and bills and see any options to change your package if required.

Yeah, I also got the email

The most telling bit is below, which I believe it's because of the recent 15% price increase they've been found out ripping people off.

When I got my new increase, it'd actually gone up about 30-40% because they were adding in increases for a separate product (line rental saver) that id already paid up front for. When things only go up a couple of % it's less noticeable.
So I'm probably partly to blame for it being withdrawn as I kicked up a massive fuss over it. I did get my way in the end, and they re-contracted me on a new cheaper deal  B)

It's likely been withdrawn because of people like you kicking up a fuss when they didn't rip you off. It's always been the case you paid a set amount upfront for a 19.99 credit off the full price which any increases were applied too so despite you kicking up a fuss you weren't being ripped off.

I was being ripped off. I paid up front for something, so they can't come back & say they want more money afterwards. Do you work for BT by any chance? Yes the £19.99 credit is how the mechanics of it worked, but it's not being sold that way. It's being sold as pay for this up front & get a month free.
So if I'm not being ripped off, they're guilty of mis-selling products.
Thankfully the person I spoke to agreed with me that the way it worked was a mess.

Answer you have been given previous post is correct, now due to those who formed same misguided opinion and kicked up a fuss majority of customers including me will now lose opportunity of £19.99 discount for paying just over £219 up front.

Before you fire back, consider fact you will continue to get annual %  increase without opportunity of a £19.99 per year discount.

Wrong. The issue is that BT continued calling it "line rental saver" was misleading for customers when it clearly wasn't a line rental saver.

Theres several threads about it on the BT forum with loads equally angry about it.

Had they been more open about it & just called it a £20 discount it wouldn't have been an issue. I suspect they've had loads of complaints made to Ofcom about it, and been pushed into withdrawing it.

From a moneysaving perspective does not matter what they called it, it was a £19.99 per year discount for paying £219.ish upfront.

Yes it does. Because if it actually related to the line rental, then you are being ripped off by being charged an increase retrospectively.
The fact it had nothing to do with line rental cost is very misleading

When the broadband and line rental cost for broadband customers was required to be combined ( because you couldn’t have broadband without a line to deliver it ,)  and the total cost per month had to be prominently advertised ( stopping the separation of the bill into two parts , and  allocating most of the cost to LR artificially making the broadband element look cheaper than it was ) would have been the correct time to retire or replace LRS .

Its been years since LRS had any real connection to ‘line rental’ it simply was offering a £20 discount for paying £220 upfront, but it should have been made clearer that all the £220 upfront payment achieved was £20 off the bill over a year  , it would still be a pretty decent return on £220 , as the bank interest on a £220 balance ( reducing over 11 months to zero ) would be pennies.

LRS is now so discredited , by not stopping ‘line rental’ being increased for those that paid £220 LRS upfront ( although they did get £20 off ) , it’s no surprise it’s going.

I think BT were the only company still offering LRS - Plusnet certainly dumped it in 2021
  • It matters hugely what they call it, and BT knew it. Deliberately misleading, and thankfully they have been pulled up on it.
