If I am going to have to reveal the "23" plate, there is no point in having the DVLA Personalised Registration.

"The 23 plate car was a weekend test drive, then we went and picked up the 19 plate that looks exactly the same, weird eh?".

If you're particularly worried, can you just park it somewhere else for a while? Everyone is going to be nosey at the Tesla appearing.

I thought the reason for the plate was to hide the age from those engaging your consultancy services. So why does it matter what the neighbours see?
  • Over the last 20 years, every time I have collected a new car on a Saturday, I have always received the V5C without fail by the Monday.  I am presuming that the dealer is simply covering themselves to set expectations and avoid people querying if it takes a couple of days due to post.  I cannot see them letting you drive away in an unregistered car, and I doubt they're just popping a form into a post box down the road... so they will be pushing the button before you leave and I guess a few minutes later the V5C is already in the post?

I would chance it if it were me.  FWIW I'm hoping to collect my new car in October (long lead times and all that) and have my eye on a 14 plate instead of a 73 plate for similar reasons...
I find the Royal Mail much less reliable these days, seems like a lottery
Sometimes 2nd class been delivered the next day,  1st class delivered after a week.
Had 2 LPA that would have been done at same time arrive 3 days apart.
A tracked 48 arrived today after 10 days!

Will find out how quick my V5C comes as generated one today (12.16pm).

I am starting to think to not bother at all with the registration and just accept it with what it comes with.  I'll save a grand and the hassle.

The other idea is to get the car, drive to a street away, swap the plates and then leave it parked on the drive for a couple of days until the V5C arrives.

No harm in them not knowing whether new car or used...  Still better if they think used - it will let them keep feeling good.

I have a friend on her 4th black Nissan Juke for similar reasons (in her case she doesn't want friends of her ex commenting back that she has a new car). It is obvious to those that know about cars, but to everyone else it is under the radar.

Personally, we went the other way and dumped our personalised plates as we were getting irritated by people always spotting where we were.

As for your case, it's a Tesla so 3 options:

    1. tax benefits of EVs have swung you
    2. environmental concerns or virtue signalling, depending how people view you
    3. it's a Tesla, that carries some "posing" credentials however you dress it up.

Without knowing you, I would class any consultant arriving at work in category 1. You can play this up by replying to any comments that your accountant advised you to get an EV on a company lease and Tesla was the company that had stock.

Or you could future proof and get a personalised GCH 4 P. With a screw in the right place and some illegal positioning G CH4P.

...I like the idea of saying that T gave you a loan car as your car wasn't ready. That is completely believable.

This is MSE so, yes, the EV is swung by the tax incentives.
There is also a bit of (2) as a large part of my work is on environmental efficiency, so the message signalling serves a purpose.

I am not into posing (I guess, partly why I don't want to be seen in a brand new car).  My wife has a 66 Fiesta.  My cars, until recently, were a 2007 Focus rust-bucket with >150k miles that I gave to my Nephew in November.  Then a 1997 Fiesta that I had to sell because of ULEZ coming.

I actually found the 1997 Fiesta was a perfect car for business as it was a conversation starter around classic cars and "had one when I was younger - so cool".  That didn't work with the Focus because it was just an old car.  Truth is, the 97 Fiesta was an old car - we had one when we were younger and just kept it.

The choice of the Tesla rather than any other EV was based around:
    1. range on a single charge
    2. charging network
    3. price point with the 1/4 end sales targets that Elon was trying to meet
    4. prefer a car rather than SUV

I've jumped right in and ordered the plate.
Not an MSE thing to do, but I save VED buying an EV so this £1k just helps the Chancellor a little by way of a thankyou ;)

Get the car next Friday so should have the plates ready to swap right over just as soon as the V5C arrives.  I'll put the plates on and leave the car on the drive for a couple of days that it should take.
