Getting a ring off my finger - help it' s stuck!

Options
Any ideas? I always always always take my rings off before I go to bed, as I have excema and scratch my hands in my sleep... which makes them swell. So I now have my eternity ring stuck on my finger above my engagement ring (which isn't stuck) As I don't want to have it cut off and then have to pay to have it put back together does anyone have any ideas!!! Please help!!!
I have tried :
* Hair conditioner
* Windex
* Holding hand in ice water
* Holding ice pack on hand and holding above my head
* Washing up liquid
* Liquid moisturising soap
* Hand cream

Please help me!
Thanks x

  • Removing a ring can sometimes be a problem . . . especially when changes in temperature or humidity have caused the finger it's on to swell. A string or thread, though, can sometimes do the job when the usual soap treatment fails.

    Run one end of a length of thread or light string under the hand ornament . . . and wind the other end—in tight, closely spaced coils—down the finger and over the knuckle. It's then usually a simple matter to slip the offending bauble off over the wrapping. And if that doesn't work, grasp the loose end of the thread (the one pointing toward your palm) securely in your other hand, pull the "tail" up against the back of the ring, and—while exerting continued "forward" pressure on the wrapping—start to uncoil it from around the finger. As the thread unwinds, it should gently push the ring ahead of it . . . right off over the knuckle!

    Worth a shot?

    Not sure what to suggest as you have tried everything I would have with the exception of butter-I'm sure that's meant to work. The only thing is the more you try the more swollen your fingers will become, could you perhaps ring your local hospital for advice?
  • Can you wait till tomorrow? your finger maybe smaller in the morning. Also I would suggest that you cool your hand for quite a while, perhaps you haven't given it long enough to work

    It sounds like your eternity ring is too small anyway, so why not have it cut off by a jeweller and he/she can insert a piece to enlarge the ring for a better fit?

    You seem to have tried lots of methods already. My tip would be to get some help from another pair of hands. If you've applied hand cream or other slippery lotions..........you're probably struggling to grip the ring anyway. If your helper gently twists the ring off your finger, their ungreasy fingers might make it easier to remove.

    I would try immersing the ring finger in cold water (or under the running cold tap) and then apply the slippery lotion (hand cream?) then get the helper to remove the ring.

    If you want to wear the ring again..........think seriously about getting it enlarged before you wear it again.;)

    Try making the ring warm so it expands.You could put your hand in hot water for this ,obviously you have to make sure it is hand hot.Remember the iron ring and ball experiment from science lessons? Thats what I would try,with a little veg oil on my finger to help ease it off.The thread idea sounds good though.

    From what I know my hand might expand more than the ring.

    Thanks all for your suggestions, I am definitely going to get it resized!!

    As an old AE doc, the thread trick is the most likely thing you will be offered in AE. That or resorting to a ring cutter. We always used to use a fairly wide tape (or very thin bandage) rather than thread, start at the tip and wind up to the ring and then pass under the ring, unwind and it should come off.

    When I recently broke my wrist I had to get two rings cut off my finger as all the tricks in the nurse's book didn't work and it was all so sore I eventually said/shouted forget it, just cut them off....

    and no reflection to pavlovs_dog but both my rings were shall we say somewhat better quality than Argos and took an absolute age for the cutting tool to get through and all this had to be done before going to get a plaster on my wrist.

    :eek:

    I was adviced by the nurse not to have them sized again for several weeks until all the swelling on my fingers had gone down, which has just reminded me that I better get out the insurance policy and get it sorted out now.
