Had a similar issue with my Uncles door recently.  I managed to untangle the door and get it going again but unfortunately it was stopping in the wrong places due to the calibration of the  open/shut limits having been messed up.  As far as i could see all that was need was a simple recalibration of the open and shut limits , which for my own garage door i have the instructions and have done from time to time over the years.  My Uncle had no instructions provided with his ...i searched the internet high and low with the model of his door/control unit, but no calibration instructions to be found....we were forced to call out the firm that fitted the door...i wasnt there when they came , but they charged him a princely sum for resetting it.  Nice business if you can get it.   Sounds like your man is clueless.

Really does sound like a “simple” set up issue - The door limits are either not set or set incorrectly.
Have you got the control box manual to set its limits again?
Everything so far and especially the bouncing says to me it doesn’t know when to stop.
Is this the sort of thing that unsets itself? It was working OK for 3 years up to now

It’s very model and sensor (including type used) dependent but can be lost if the circuit trips, manual use beyond programmed limits, overheating and sometimes for being interrupted mid cycle more than a couple times.

The instructions for the control unit should be online if you don’t have a paper copy (model number should be on unit), essentially put in learn mode, run door up to limit, “set” and repeat the same for downwards, reconnect any sensors that are not hardwired to the control unit and done (at least that’s the theory”

Your comment about overheating is interesting - the installer did say that they could overheat from time to time. I was a bit surprised TBH

If the fitter both supplied and fitted the door, isn't your contract with them? And ditto the warranty?

    I don't know.

Not after a year. The extended warranty is down to the manufacturer, and certainly isn't the installer's liability.

So the door is now not closing properly - it closes to within about a foot of the ground, then stops dead but the motor keeps running and the "wound" section of the door loops up around the spindle at the top. Sometimes it forces itself to close, with the door crashing down the last 12 inches.Other times I need to forcibly pull it down to close it.
I can't see any obvious obstruction that's preventing the door from closing. Any idea what might be causing this?
  • I wonder do the door guides need lubricating? The doors we have say to spray furniture polish on the guides and not to use oil or grease. If the door is stopping part way but the motor is still trying to turn or the door isn’t moving in a smooth manner, it would suggest it’s sticking somewhere. Might also explain why the control board no longer recognises the exact position of the door - had that before where the door was only half way down but it thought it was fully closed.
