We have been running an ASHP as our only means of heating for several years now. Average COP (measured with heat metering) is about 3.85. Worst weather is cool and damp. Best weather is cold and dry.Main efficiency issue is the energy wasted when the evaporator ices and the heat pump has to de-ice. When doing that it pumps heat out of the house and wastes it melting the ice away.I found that by never letting the heat pump run around dusk on cool, damp, days efficiency improved a lot. If there are signs of dew forming outside then you can be certain there will be ice forming on the much colder heat pump evaporator.Overall we're very pleased with our ASHP. We are off the gas grid so the choice was electricity, oil or LPG. Oil and LPG are far more expensive. Our house is well insulated but twice the size of our old house. The old house had a gas combi for heating yet cost around double the cost of running the heat pump here.4
