As a bit of a background

I've already got solar panels and I'll be doubling my array to 6.4KwH and quadrupling my battery with the GivEnergy all in one 13.5 kWh system

I also won't be getting a heat pump until I've replaced all my piping, got new windows and doors, made my house super insulted and got an MVHR too ie: to reduce my overall gas usage anyway

What kind of COPs are people getting in the winter for an ASHP? Octopus cosy rates for instance are 19.63/kWh but gas prices are like 4p/kWh or so on tracker. It's a tad more expensive today but it's been below 4p/kWh for a while now

Is anyone getting a COP of say 3 in winter? That makes heat pumps look a touch better at least

What part of the country are you, and what are your typical Winter air temperatures? I suspect installations in say Cornwall are going to give different results from those in Aberdeenshire.

4 for heating, 2.5 for DHW when it was installed in Feb. I don't have a dedicated monitoring package so that is based on the HPs own numbers which they don't guarantee.

UFH downstairs - my flow temps are pretty low.

Total for heating and HW Dec-Feb 3.01.  East Midlands, all radiators.  That's accurate, with MMSP monitoring. So yes to 3.

Note that I don't chase COP - I could get it higher but am more interested in energy/cost  :)

    Weather Spark is quite useful.

For instance I googled:-   Kendal + average winter air temp

and one of the results was this:

Climate and Average Weather Year Round in Kendal

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

I would give you an answer if I could but unlike @shinytop I don't have the monitoring equipment to know.

I’m having an ASHP fitted in the NW in a few weeks and my installer has a reputation for high COP installations but I need to see it firsthand when the thermometer plummets to fully believe it. I’ll let you know what I get!

It'd be good to know who your installer is too

But yes, it's difficult to know about high COPs until we actually get to the time of year that we need heating

I have noticed that there is a *slight* benefit of high COPs in June too. I got my parents to download loop. They used gas between say 8pm and 11pm when the outside temperature was pretty decent

A COP of 5 at that time would be pretty good though they can't really get an ASHP, except maybe in the cellar because they've got a terraced house

It’s a partnership between Brendon Uys at Heacol (https://heacol.co.uk/ ) who does the system design and Energy Naturally Renewables (https://www.enrenewables.co.uk/ who installs). Both are MCS accredited but Brendon has a different approach to ASHP systems to many- he never uses buffer tanks, low loss headers, glycol, 3rd party on/off type thermostats or flow restricting valves. A stone house he did in Keswick had an average COP of 4.7 for the month of December ’22. He’s also part of a group that have set up a ASHP installer training centre/working showroom down in Oxon.

A COP of 4.7 in December 2022 is pretty damn good tbh

That was the month I used most of my gas. I used almost 2000 kWh then, and even then realistically it should have been 1000 kWh more but I was trying to keep it at 18C instead of say a more comfortable 21/22C

    That makes heating reasonably cheap

Though I still think I need to replace all my radiators and piping first anyway. If I want similar, which company from the above should I contact? And do you have a particular contact?
