I can remember the nightmare of my first ever bank account.  I was 19 and had just gone off to University in 1971.  The only way of knowing how much money I had was to wait for a statement or queue up at the bank and ask them for a balance.  One day they told me my balance was £10 but it was actually -£10.  Fortunately that doesn’t happen now.
I started university in 1971 too and I remember banking my grant cheque with Nat West at the start of term and regularly queuing up to withdraw £10 cash to last me the week. As the term neared an end there was sometimes no money left in my account and I would nervously ask for £10 hoping the cashier would not check my balance.

In those days that meant they had to leave the counter and go to the back of the office.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
