The continuing saga of broken ankle over xmas...hired a wheelchair from red cross..to go to sisters on xmas day..22 pound a week..good job I did..nearest parking space to her house 500 yards away..due to parked cars..wouldn't have made it with walker... a bit worried as my brother got drunker and drunker...who was talking me back via wheelchair and taxi...although did make it back ok....my disabled niece bless her briefly in hospital ...so rightly supported her..fewer meal runs...meant heavier reliance on my preps...will start the criminal injuries process this week...as I had plate and screws put in ankle...thankfully guy still in custody...2 weeks left before cast taken off

I hope you're soon recovered, @daz378, though perhaps with cold weather forecast, it's best you don't try to go out too often.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

How're you doing with the cast now off, @daz378? (I hope!) The first bath where you can really get at the bits that have itched with soap & flannel is marvellous, but then there is this strangely light & vulnerable feeling without a Plaster of Paris sock. Are you doing All the physio exercises (and have you a robust rewards program in place? I used polos to keep tabs on each set, and would trade them up to a soup I really wanted 'earned' over days)
Cooking for yourself too! Awed - as a bachelor lass I ate a lot of porridge. Some of it cold when I felt too wobbly to stand & stir.8 -
I've been reading an account of someone whose life & family were gravely impacted by wildfires in the States last year, and suddenly realised that this is something I need to start thinking about. Last summer's Holt Heath fire was just a couple of miles away from us & the area is completely devastated to this day. It may look rural but it's scarily close to several suburbs... plus there've been fires not much further away but to the west of us, where the wind generally comes from; the smoke has blown right over us. One down in Poole last year was just a few hundred yards from DS3's home & family; luckily that one was extinguished quite swiftly but again, we could smell it here. It's all getting a bit close and it's probably only a matter of time before it does impact homes... time to find & update my "go" bag, id & insurance documentation, methinks...Angie - GC Feb 26 £85.58/£400: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 40/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)8

Always a good idea to action the idea whilst it's on your mind - that way you have no "if only" regrets as you are hustled off to parts unknown. Like the hospital bag - sitting there unused for months, brilliant. Means you haven't gone flying on the snow & ice & are tethered to a hospital bed til the surgeon can reassemble a limb. Even leaving a tenner in a pocket of a rarely worn coat means you know there's a bit of cash handy if the cashpoints drop offline & the card readers all lose their internet connection.9

You just made me think, @DigForVictory, I must check my coats. I have a habit of putting a £5 or £10 note in the inside zipped pocket of my coat when I go out without my bag, for a walk! I could be worth a small fortune! 😉2025 Fashion on the ration

I live adjoining Upton Heath so not far from where you are. You probably remember the massive fire a few years ago on the Heath which was very frightening. That one and the many subsequent ones nearby have made me realise the necessity of being prepared. Last summer was a bad time with so many fires.thriftwizard said:I've been reading an account of someone whose life & family were gravely impacted by wildfires in the States last year, and suddenly realised that this is something I need to start thinking about.
