As an example rents are shooting up and LHA doesnt track them. Another one is if course supermarket costs, any renewed support also wouldnt need to be at same levels as previously.LHA petition here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/6366230

I fully agree about col payments but it was a good way of showing that regardless of everything else households could have had a free year of energy with all the payments and schemes. Infact super scrumpy users could have had a lot spare as well. They will really feel it this year as they will have their energy bill plus all the inflation increases.Chrysalis said:Mstty said:The price cap in the winter of 2021 was £1271
A few doors down they received
£400 EBSS
£200 AFP
£150 CTax rebate
£900 COL
£150 energy shift events
£1800 total
Their energy bill was £1750 April 22 - April 23
Last year went so far with money thrown about that this year is going to be a bigger shock than last year was supposed to be.
I am certain ML hq are already formulating a plan of attack.
In my opinion they went so far last year that they will probably have to throw more money at it again this year.Bear in mind there is more costs in life than energy and the CoL payments were generic, not energy specific. As an example rents are shooting up and LHA doesnt track them. Another one is if course supermarket costs, any renewed support also wouldnt need to be at same levels as previously. But I think its all moot as we all being groomed that the current energy costs are fine and its the new norm we have to deal with.
I do expect ML to take this up and have sympathy for those that really need the support this year when it might be forgotten with reductions in the price cap, inflation rates coming down etc.
Indeed, I still havent forgotten you helping everyone with the tracker recommendation last year, that has I am sure helped people considerably.

Human nature is empathetic, but also for many of us we are pragmatic. Blanket handouts to all households are incredibly inefficient at reaching those in need, so the COL payments are a much better idea for example. If there are more funds available using them where needed most, in healthcare or education, would make far more sense than giving another £400 bung to the majority of households who do not need it.Chrysalis said:As much as the poorest need it, I think the government are done, the remaining CoL payments will be the last and when the EPG times out that will be it.When it comes down to it the CoL and the £400 were the best parts, it feels like the EPG just was a vacuum to suck up cash to placate those who didnt qualify for CoL as it was designed so wastefully.I just dont think there will be enough support as the way of human nature is a lack of empathy to others. (Im alright jack)I will sign the petition though.3 -

I would be ok with a new EBSS being means tested and tapered.

Means-testing costs money which is why the Government gives OAPs a Winter fuel payment etc irrespective of need. Also, as people have found out with the changes to WHD, there are always winners and losers. Understandably, the losers tend to be the most vocal.Chrysalis said:MattMattMattUK said:

FWiW, I do not believe that energy customers should be expected to pay for welfare through their energy bills. The welfare of its citizens is a Government responsibility and it should be paid out of taxation - but higher taxes do not get politicians elected.1 -
100% agree, taxation is the correct source for funding, not levies on energy costs.[Deleted User] said:FWiW, I do not believe that energy customers should be expected to pay for welfare through their energy bills. Is there any evidence of any petition ever making any difference to policy? Genuinely interested - I can't think of any situations myself.will_he_wont_he said:

Questions for OP, since he/she supports the petition.
a) what level of income do you believe a person of working age should have to start paying for all of their own bills.
b) what level of income do you believe a person of working age should have to pay for other peoples' bills, as well as their own.0 -
