Presumably anyone who says they didn't need the £400 last winter did the right thing and paid the money back to the government...
They paid it in taxes and future taxes for years to come.
That's a convincing argument to accept any money the government offers you whether you need it or not.

(Edit: not intended to be sarcastic)

There isn't any system to pay it back to the government.

Some people did pass it on to those more in need though.

There is, but admittedly you can't choose what they spend it on, so it goes into the general pot.

Where do you pay it to?

I am an accountant, if I pay our PAYE early they don't know what to do with it.

It would be helpful if you could direct us to the place where it tells us how to repay.

Not directly repay but it's essentially the same thing:

Yes, some did - and when they shared that information on this forum they were accused of virtue signalling!

The price cap in the winter of 2021 was £1271

A few doors down they received

    £400 EBSS
    £200 AFP
    £150 CTax rebate
    £900 COL
    £150 energy shift events

    £1800 total

Their energy bill was £1750 April 22 - April 23

Last year went so far with money thrown about that this year is going to be a bigger shock than last year was supposed to be.

I am certain ML hq are already formulating a plan of attack.

In my opinion they went so far last year that they will probably have to throw more money at it again this year.

Bear in mind there is more costs in life than energy and the CoL payments were generic, not energy specific.

As an example rents are shooting up and LHA doesnt track them.  Another one is if course supermarket costs, any renewed support also wouldnt need to be at same levels as previously.

But I think its all moot as we all being groomed that the current energy costs are fine and its the new norm we have to deal with.

Which CoL did they qualify for?

£650 was means tested, another £150 if disabled.  So curious how you got to £900.

This year is reported as £900 but is actually £600 as the 3rd is a 2024 payment.

I fully agree about col payments but it was a good way of showing that regardless of everything else households could have had a free year of energy with all the payments and schemes. Infact super scrumpy users could have had a lot spare as well. They will really feel it this year as they will have their energy bill plus all the inflation increases.

I do expect ML to take this up and have sympathy for those that really need the support this year when it might be forgotten with reductions in the price cap, inflation rates coming down etc.
