Well I'm sure a major retail chain would not want a pallet load of their customers data being leaked onto the open market. I'm pretty sure these were supposed to be dumped.
But like you say I don't think that will help me....

Dept store may be interested if they were supposed to be scrapped that they have been resold and may not do business with that person again if they can trace them but it wouldn't help you recover any money. 

The only way to get any money back (assuming he isn't going to refund you out of the goodness of his heart) is a civil court action and fingers crossed that you a) win and b) are able to recover anything.

John Lewis Partnerships have set up and paid for a licenced waste carrier to collect that pallet and transport it to an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility. They have all the correct paperwork.
The waste is not supposed to be dumped. The AATF is supposed to recover precious metals, lithium battery components, etc. for re-use.
But there is leakage in this costly chain. Your friend found the perfect scam. He was paid to get rid of some of this waste and he sold it to you.

I'm not sure where you got John Lewis from but anyway yes they will have paid for them to be disposed of and presumably wiped. When I said dumped that's what I was inferring. Somebody is responsible for 100's of customers data finding itself onto the open market. Anyway it doesn't do me much good really...I'll have to issue a court claim...

At best the chain store may take off your hands to dispose of properly.

That would save you the hassle of disposing o them but they are not going to pay you any money.

I'm not expecting any money from the store. I'd like to know how they got into this traders hands.
