Should inflation start to drop (next data due in a week or so) the 5% rate will remain both a physiological and a psychological barrier for quite a while ...
    Also from today news:
(Reuters) -Britain's unemployment rate rose and there were other signs of less inflationary heat in the labour market in data published on Tuesday, prompting investors to scale back some of their bets on further Bank of England interest rate hikes.

I agree the difference between 4.8/4.9 and 5 is as good as nothing I think some see it as a physiological barrier
Seems rather more likely to be seen as a psychological barrier!
We all know 4.90% is a rubbish rate. But 5.00% is a brilliant rate  ;)

And I would have thought a better Handel would be Messiah.

Messiah? are you honouring me or trying to trigger me? It seems you have the blind followers. As for Handel, for sure he turned me into a Teutonophile, especially when he produced Zadok the Priest, a very British patriotic anthem.

And the only reason is that inflation will remain much higher than expected for much longer than expected.

Hardly a situation to be celebrated.  :'(

I'm a mere small cog in the UK plc, but your lament is noted.
