  • Hi everyone, apologies, but I've gone through this thread and I'm unable to obtain my answer and I'm hoping someone can help me.

I want to go for the Nationwide £200 switch offer, but their T&C state clearly that 2 DDs need to move as part of the switch.  What can you recommend that I can do to setup 2 DD's quickly?
All the options are listed on the first page of this thread. If you're unable to shuffle around existing DDs (eg. bills, credit cards, etc) then two of the easiest ones to set up are Plum and Moneybox.
Thanks very much for your help.

I've looked at my banks and I can see O2, Virgin Media and Octopus direct debits setup.

I also have Revolut and Chip, although not sure how to setup a DD with them or whether that's even possible.

Would it be easier to move any of the above existing accounts or am I just better off opening a new account with Plum & Moneybox?

Another issue I forgot to ask about is does money actually have to leave the account or can there be a DD without any payments being made?  Also does it matter if it's monthly or quarterly?

I just want the quickest and easiest way to setup DD.

If all you're looking to do is set up an account to get a switch incentive then it's probably a bit of faff to have to shuffle around your phone/internet/energy DDs, but if you'd rather not have to open new accounts that's the way to do it. Might take a monthly billing cycle to get things working properly. Otherwise for the quickest, I'd stick with the ones I mentioned. You can have a DD set up with Plum/Moneybox and make a payment in a week or so.

It's safer to have the DD make at least one payment before switching - some banks don't recognise DDs that have been set up but haven't been used. Weekly/monthly/annual won't matter, as long as the DD is active it will count for the switch. You'll need a few quid in your donor account when the DDs pulls though otherwise it will go overdrawn, or get rejected.
Oh that's absolutely brilliant, thanks so much!  Yes happy to setup new Plum/Moneybox accounts. Let me set them up and if I have other questions, I'll get back to you.  Thank you again
Also it may be worth noting that the terms of the Nationwide switching offer state that you'd need to complete the switch within 60 days of requesting it so if you requested the switch today you could set the switch date for as late as 21st November if you wanted to and still qualify for the £200. This would give you about 7 weeks to set up the 2 DDs on your donor account which is ample time for most of the items on the lists.
I opened my account yesterday and the latest I could pick for the switch completion date was 19th October. I moved 3 direct debits over to the donor account (Lloyds), which I hold since March. All 3 DD are for credit cards, however only on 1 credit card I have repayments, the other 2 credit cards are zero so once they are fully set up they are still active, even if they don't take any money. Should be ample time to have them set up and active. I might make a purchase of one banana/apple with each so I have some activity.

Interestingly enough, you only need them active for the switch but no restriction that they have to stay with Nationwide once the bonus has been paid. very different story with TSB, where you have to keep them active and running to get the £75 as part 2 of the switch.

is the £75 for a previous TSB switching deal or the current one as I only thought the current on gave you the extra £5 a month (£30 in total) ?

Previous switching deal, which was higher with £125 for part 1,  £75 for part 2 and 6 x £5 makes in total  £230. The new switching offer would only yield  £210 if I calculated right.

Based on the T&C's here  you only need the 2 active DD for the switch but not for another 6 months after. I would keep the DD until the incentive of £150 is paid. Most likely the payment will be mid November. Payment for the previous offer was 13th September and they said at the time it will be paid by 30th September.

The 20 payments Oh and I satisfy by using paypal using Friends & Family payments and we send each other 20 x
£0.01. Has been working without issue with either paypal or TSB for me for over a year.

I've done the same as you @worriednoob.

£2 is due to go in my Moneybox next Wednesday and i've got a £2 weekly depositor set up from Plum, though it doesnt say when it will take the money.

Hopefully the DDs go through next week and I can get on with my Nationwide switch.
That's my hope too.  By the way, I must be useless, but where in either of the apps does it show what day the DD is being taken on?

The way Moneybox works, in my experience, is that you can add money to the collection pot from Thursday to Tuesday-ish. On the Wednesday it is collected, and the DD is taken the following Monday.

So DD always on a Monday (bar BHs) and thus various dates.

With @dealyboy kindly posting on HERE that Nationwide allow you to not only switch individually, but additionally as joint account holders too, this means £200 per individual account + another £200 for joint account too.

This brings me to the question, having used Plum/Moneybox to setup DD for our individual accounts, how can we now also setup an additional DD for our joint account that is weekly?

Each Moneybox and Plum account can only be used to generate 1 DD each, so you will need to juggle them around if you don't find other DDs you can use.

I'd leave things as they are until your first Nationwide switch incentives pay out and you receive the cash (I'm assuming your joint account holder is also doing a sole switch?). Then you're safe to change your linked account with Moneybox/Plum to your joint nationwide account. From there set up new DDs in the same way you have for your sole account, and then go through the motions again for your joint switch.
