This is probably in the wrong place as I had no idea where to put it.
Anyway, live it a terrace house and some nights there is an awful smell in my little boys room. It is only there at night and it is a very very sweet sickly yukky smell I'm sorry to sound so nieve (sp) but is there any way this could be cannabis smell from next door. I've no proof that they do actually smoke it (three youngish blokes live there, two haven't lived there very long) but the smell is ghastly and it only ever smells in my boys room (before you ask, no I'm sure it's not him as he's only 2!!)
If this is what we smell - a) is it doing any harm to my boy? b) what can we do??
to be honest think we'll be moving in May as they're getting right on my wires with noise etc but just wanted an opinion as to what else this smell could be

If it smells herby too then it is likely to be cannabis. Unfortunately, I don't know what effect it will have on your little boy, I know that I can't stand the smell because it makes me feel sick and gives me a headache. I suffer with a similar problem - I live in a first floor flat but I have a set of neighbours who live in the basement flat and have direct access to the garden - they very often smoke the stuff and the smell wafts into my flat and onto my washing that hangs on the balcony. Plus, you only have to go on a bus trip here in Birmingham and the bus stinks of cannabis - I don't know how the drivers manage to drive safely:eek:
You could try contacting environmental health to complain about bad smells coming from next door and see what they say or do about it.
Hope this helps?0 -
hmmmm thanks Horace, not sure if I'd say herby, possibly though, it's mainly the sweet sickly thing that turns my stomach, stupid thing is it's their bathroom that is next to my boys room - perhaps that's where they smoke it -
All I know is that it's foul & have to open his door & window to get rid of it which isn't great in this weather0 -
my friend had the same problem.. turned out they were growing it in the airing cupboard  ... would that be near the bathroom?? would explain the strong smell ...£608.98

It's only some nights so think they must be smoking the stuff rather than growing it although I guess you never know. The guy who lives there separated from his girlfriend who used to live there and ever since she and the 2 children moved out we've had trouble from them, not really bad, but noise at all times of night (they were all shouting and carrying on watching the boxing the other week at 4am!) and now this smell is the last straw really.0

If it helps i smoked alot of weed int he bathroom when i was using, as i thoguht i was hiding the amount i smoked, its a common place for addicts i think.
could you ask them ?If i upset you don't stress, never forget that god aint finished with me yet.0 -
Effects of inhaling cannabis smoke will vary from person to person. You get the usual effects of inhaling any smoke, but apparently cannabis contains 20 times more ammonia than cigarette smoke as well as the usual carcinogens.
Me personally, it sends me to sleep. Never could stand to be around it or Id be snoring in seconds. It can also make you incredibly hungry. I'm guessing prolonged exposure could make him irritable as well.
I cant offer any advice Im afraid, but it may be worth having a quiet word with your doctor, he may be able to run a test to see if he is directly inhaling it?0 -
Thanks for all the help with this one. The only problem I have with asking is how to approach it and also if they then turn on us and make life hell. I try to be rational and say well it's only the odd night that they're noisy and it's only a few nights we get the smell but at the time I'm furious0

Its difficult. If you are moving in May I think Id be tempted to just keep plodding on. The other question is are you selling your home? because if you are then you legally need to declare any problems with your neighbours0 -
Thankfully no, we only rent it, (but neighbour owns theirs)I will be letting the landlady know about our problems. We're still a bit up in the air about moving and I think one of our reasons for moving is the neighbours, will see how long before the smell re-appears I think before deciding to say something or not.0
