Well done Zarah! That's brilliant! I remember I made pasties with leftover pastry, and some mash mixed with cheese onion and mustard. I took pics of those as well he he! So exciting!

    Zazen, was the jam easy?

Im more than happy to share recipe but i do warn that i do vary things according to what i have at home.
Ok my recipe made 10 pasties:
    4 medium Onions(finely chopped)
5 medium Potatoes(Chopped in to small squares)
    4 Grated Garlic segments
500gm of Short Crust Pastry at room temperature(i bought mine from Mrs T for 99p)
Mature Cheese( grated amount left to your own personal taste)
    1 small egg(for glazing)
    2 Tablespoon of Margarine
What would suggest is if your dont like onions to maybe just use 2/3.

Firstly boil the Potatoes for about 15 mins(if you have at home add a twig of Rosmery&then just take it out)
Whilst they boiling take the onions to task. I put Margarine in pan, let it melt for about a minute, add garlic& let it sizzle for 3/5 mins.
Next the Onions should be added to the Garlic, and Salt/Pepper according to taste.
The Onions do need stirring on a low heat for about 10 mins, until soft & a little golden.
Once the Potates are just done(not mushy but breakable stage), take off heat and transfer to a colinder running cold water through it-so they stop cooking.
Next wash/rinse Potatoe pan and put potatoes back in. Add in the Onions combine together with a fork, roughly mashing the mixture. (its upto you how finely you would like your mash)
The next stage is make ten ball shapes from your pastry(dont forget to get 2 baking trays ready with baking paper)
Ok the Cheese can be added to the mixture(please taste&add according to personal preference)
The pastry then needs to be rolled out-if you can into an oval oblong shape. Then you add 2tbsp of mixture. Try to place mixture evenly so you can pull&fold pastry over it. Then pinch ends together, gentlely put a fork over the end. Next use your fork to poke a few hole into your pastie-this is to let the air out.
Lastly pastie needs to brushed with egg(i dont even own a pastry brush-so i used kitchen tissue dipped in egg to spread onto the pastry:rolleyes:)
Now their ready to go in the oven gasmark 6,for about 20/25mins until golden brown.
I hope this recipe is not too long but i did want make easy it to follow and thanyou all again for all your encouraging kind words-everyone MSE really is terrific:o

Well done Zara. Now you have got this recipe right you'll feel more confident about experimenting with other variants which will increase your repetoire. Having a few standard recipes is a great help in menu planning. The more alternatives you have, the easier it becomes to improvise and once you feel confident with the fundamentals it's surprising how easily you can build on them.
  • Zara - well done :T

And thank you for the recipe, it has been filed in my recipe folder, I absolutely adore cheese and onion pasties!

Thank you for sharing. It brought back lovely memories of learning to bake with
my Nan, well over fifty years ago now, how she encouraged me, made light of my disasters "it will be alright covered in custard" and "don`t worry it all goes down the same way"

My very first success was an apple pie, beautiful golden thing that it was, my
Nan served the custard separate so that everyone would see it. How proud I
    was.

I am a Nan myself now and love to cook, I taught my DD and DS and love
    baking sessions with my Grandchildren.

Keep up the good work love and again many thanks for your post, its made
    my day.
Meg, I just had to say thank you - what a lovely post! It made me smile when I read it. :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Many thanks for the recipe Zara. I'll be going to the farmers market for our monthly stock-up on cheese on Sunday, so may well have a go some time next week.
