I have a Chase debit card, which is great for spending abroad, giving the perfect rate, however when I have withdrawn cash from atm`s I have been charged extra. Anyone else had the same situation?

As above - Chase are not charging you a fee, however the bank which owns the ATM may, in fact most now do to varying amounts.
Banca March in Spain/Canaries impose no fee, for example, although they are in a very small minority.

Banca March in Benidorm charged me €6 for a cash withdrawal last month but no charge in Tenerife earlier in the year.
Very unusual - did you use the same card on each occasion ?

Or did you approve sterling conversion rate offered by bank?
That wouldn't show as a EUR6 fee, that would just show as a GBP amount for the transaction.
Perhaps Banca March have jumped on the charging ATMs bandwagon in the last month or so?

If the bank charged a fee for conversion (in addition to offering poor rate) it may well show as fee/ charge. Trying to offer possible answers to query, sorry.

I've flagged this up in another thread where it may apply.
Found this Banca March webpage - they indicate no fees using their Duo Exclusive card to withdraw Euro 150, or more.
It's for a domestic debit card in Spain - however, I wonder if they now extend this to UK (and other foreign) cards ?
If so it must have been recently, as I made several currency withdrawals from a BM ATM in Tenerife a few months ago, with no fees.
I've emailed their customer services and will report any response, if / when received.

No, I used Monzo in Tenerife and Halifax Clarity credit card in Benidorm. I chose the UK bank to make the conversion.

I'm waiting for Banca March to clarify on any recent imposition of ATM usage charge.
    Will post when known.

Did you access a "user friendly" ATM like Banca March, which is just about the only bank left in Spain & The Canaries that doesn't charge a usage fee for transactions ?
We are just back from Mallorca - used Starling and Chase cards to withdraw small amounts of cash from a Banca March ATM - no fees taken on any of the four transactions.
If you used one of the ATM networks that takes a fee for dispensing currency - that explains why you had to pay extra.

  • Incidentally, I notice that Chase have just joined the Current Account Switch Service - good option if you have a dormant or rarely used account that you can "sacrifice" to switch.
Some folk are not comfortable with the app only access - apart from that it's straightforward.

We've used Banca March in Tenerife several times with no charges. November was the last one, so I'll be disappointed if they have changed.

Deutsche Bank was also fee-free in the South of Spain in May.

No change as far as Banca March is concerned - I can confirm by very recent hands on ATM transactions.
