Family bereavement

Good morningall.  Myself and wife  recently booked a week vacation to Thassos in the Greek islands. Yesterday, our Daughters live in Boyfriend suffered a massive heart attack and passed away, he was only 33. As one can expect, our  Daughter is devastated.
Our holiday departs on 14th May and we believe the funeral could be during the week we are supposed to be away, if this is so, can we be compensated for cancelling. We booked it through TUI and on the Visa credit card. Never been in a situation like this before.
Regards jeff

If you don’t have travel insurance, you will lose your money,

So sorry to hear about your devastating family situation .

Travel insurance will usually cover this .  If you give your travel insurance company a call they should be able to advise on the procedure for claiming .
Just a heads up that they will require a copy of the death certificate, which might be difficult to ask your daughter for at this time .

Visa credit card does not provide cover in this situation as the holiday company are still providing the service ( it just that you are unable to use the service ) .

Wishing you all the best as you support your daughter at this time .

    My condolences.

The only likely avenue is your travel insurance however their definition of a "close relative" may not be as all encompassing as you expect, you'll have to dig out the policy Ts and Cs.

In that case you will lose the cost of the holiday unless TUI offer you a gesture such as rebooking for a later date.

There is no redress through Visa.

It's a shame you did not follow Martin's advice and get insurance "as soon as you book"

Please don't do the above again (not taking out insurance as soon as you book) but in this situation,  I'm not sure that travel insurance would help.  The deceased wasn't 'Family'.  I think you need to appeal to TUI to ask for the booking to be postponed.

Out of interest I just checked my Staysure policy - son in law would be covered but no mention of unmarried partner.

Looks like seeing if TUI will change the booking is the only option but with only 2 weeks to go that’s less likely I think.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

We had to cancel our TUI flights due to a medical condition I had.
I showed TUI the letter and they refunded the full cost, no further questions asked.
Not quite the same as your situation but it's certainly worth enquiring.
