Money Moral Dilemma: Should I return the duplicate order I received after bad delivery service?

Another vote for let the retailer know, and ask them to arrange collection if they'd like the duplicate order back.Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!1

'Illegal' or 'grey legal area' content
Do not promote, encourage or glamorise any illegal activities. In particular on MSE, if you are thinking of posting about taking advantage of something that is dubious, or that exploits a 'grey area' of the law, err on the side of caution and do not share information about it. Common sense prevails here.

After a similar example of a poor courier service and the company I purchased from replacing my items at Christmas, I emailed the company when my original order arrived. I did not hear back from the purchase company, I’d offered to pay for the goods as I was happy to keep a duplicate set. My conscience was clear, I would have paid for the goods or returned if they had preferred.

Is my comment ironic?
Do any of us really have morals or do we mould them to our relative existence?
Do we exist?I think the questions are much easier when they are about consumer rights….In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces3 -
Keep it - the company will claim back the cost from the delivery company - it was their fault in the first place - so it may give the delivery company a kick up the backside to get things right.3

MSE_Kelvin said:This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...I placed an order worth about £50 with a major retailer, which it sent using a courier that is well known for bad service, and the order was delivered to the wrong address. After contacting the courier and getting no response, I contacted the retailer, which sent a replacement (using a different courier). The original parcel has since been dumped outside my house. Do I spend even more time arranging a return, or keep both as I’m fed up with companies using terrible couriers and think they should take responsibility for their poor choices?Unfortunately the MSE team can't answer Money Moral Dilemma questions as contributions are emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be a point of debate and discussed at face value. Remember that behind each dilemma there is a real person so, as the forum rules say, please keep it kind and keep it clean.

Unfortunately, companies don't understand the consequences of their actions and trying to punish an organisation for using rubbish couriers won't work. They sent you a replacement and it wasn't their fault that the courier got it wrong.
It doesn't hurt to be the bigger person and let them know you now have two items. See what they say. Hopefully they'll either send someone to collect one from your home, or tell you to keep them both.
You've suffered a bit of inconvenience but it's not the end of the world and it's been remedied. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. Although I do carry out careful research before posting and never intend to mislead or supply out-of-date or incorrect information, please do not rely 100% on what you are reading. Verify everything in order to protect yourself as you are responsible for any action you consequently take.2 -
I had this happen to me. Contacted the vendor, by email so there is a record, explained that second package had now arrived and asked what arrangements were for them to collect it from my home at my convenience. Retailer replied saying I should keep the duplicate. No moral dilemma here, it is not yours so you should give the rightful owner the opportunity to recover its goods as you have no right to them. You need only do the minimum necessary to allow the retailer to reasonably recover its property.2

I have no time to waste with dodgy couriers. Three times I placed orders with a reputable garden company and each time they chose to use the same courier (clue: the Swiss like to do this on mountains!) which resulted in him not even ringing my bell but throwing it on my doorstep in full view of a busy road. As you can guess, each time it went walkies. Can’t get through to this courier company to complain so told the garden company- twice they sent the product again with a different courier but third time I just requested a refund as I was fed up of their chosen courier, that nobody bothered to discipline as he is still at it and seen regularly dumping and running. If a company can’t use a decent courier and don’t change them despite many warnings then they deserve the loss. I would send a quick email (and keep copies) to let them know about the duplicate order and it needs collecting at their expense or a free post label sending to you, but don’t waste too much time on this as life is too short, especially if there is no reply within 14 days,2

Had a similar occurrence Christmas before last. Contacted the company to advise of the duplication and was told to keep both, no extra to pay (would only have been £5.75). So honesty does pay.1
