Bill from Octopus after moving house, but I brought my supplier

Hi,

I've just received bills from Octopus Energy for my new flat from the 2nd April to the 15th April for electricty used, and telling me to get in touch as they are my new energy supplier and I need to set up account and billing with them for my new home.

However, I only moved in on the 10th April (as per the contract). That isn't a big issue though, because I can tell them to send that portion to the landlord.

Of more concern is the fact I brought my old supplier, Eon Next with me when i moved. They set up my home move before time, sent me the bill and information I needed (I'm still on a 2 year fix from December 2021-2023) and as far as I'm concerned everything is in place, and Octopus are not my supplier.

I tried to contact Octopus, but was on hold for 20 minutes and gave up. What's going on, and what do I do to make sure I don't get any bills from Octopus.

    Hi,
you can't carry your old supplier to a new address, you are on a deemed contract with the existing supplier of new address when you move in.
You contact them, give entry readings, after that you can then switch supplier.

If I can't carry my old supplier, why did Eon say I  could and set everything up?

I've just checked. I'm over £100 in credit with Eon, I have an active electtricity account at my new address and my regular DD has come out. Looks like I'm paying twice...
  • When did you become responsible for the bills? You moved in on the 10th was this when you also took ownership? The previous occupiers appear to have moved out on the 2nd so who was responsible for the bills for that period.

You can not move supplier until you are responsible for the bills so the fact they say they have is where the problems may have started.

As above, you are on a deemed contact with the current supplier from the start, once you've registered and opened an account you can then switch away.

You need to be contacting Eon and not Octopus to get this sorted. That being said - who is the bill from Octopus addressed to and to the meter reads match up to what you have on record.

I've contacted Octopus, who told me they are my existing supplier for this property. Set up the account as requested.

I contacted Eon Next just now who told me two things; firstly they took over my energy supply on he 10th April as requested, and that infomration in "clear as crystal" on the central energy database.

Secondly, the previous supplier for the last 4 years was Bulb. I am flummoxed. They said Octopus have nothing to do with this property.

Octopus now owns Bulb: it is in the process of moving all Bulb accounts across to the Octopus system.  If E.oN Next took over your supply on the 10th, then Octopus will close your account; raise a Final Bill for £0 and refund you all money paid.
  • What does it say here who your supplier is

Bulb have been "taken over" by Octopus - seems to me that Eon Next don't know what they are saying!

Rang back Octopus. I told them to check who the supplier on the central database is because Eon Next say it's clear as crystal them. They said, "oh, yes it say Eon".Not sure why you're being billed. You and me both sonny. Asked me to give the details of my landlord. Not sure what's going on, not sure I care, but what a waste of 90 minutes.

If there is a gap between the old tenancy ending and the new one (yours) starting,  then the landlord is responsible for any energy bills in the interim.

  • Next time you move house just remember you need to contact the current supplier on the day you move in, tell them you have moved in and give moving in meter readings. Then contact your old supplier and then you can switch back to them at the new house.

This is what is meant to happen, and this is what E.ON should have told you to do. But at least now you know for next time
