Just a random comment i deliberately paid my cattery bill with my Chase card to get the cash back.  I noticed I didn’t get any and it seems they must be using some random category of spend that falls outside the criteria so if using a local merchant don’t always assume cashback is coming.
Chase cashback tends to be mainly for physical purchases, so things like insurance, utility bills and services you pay for tend to be excluded.
Utility bills should be included. Octopus Energy was one that they didn't initially pay cashback for, but I queried it with them and they agreed it shouldn't be excluded and now automatically pays cashback. I've not had a problem with phone/broadband or water. Council Tax is excluded under Government Services.

Ah, OK - thanks for that. I guess the issue is that most people tend to pay utility bills by direct debit these days and switching back to paying bills individually by debit card (if that's even possible) would be pain and take quite a lot of managing to ensure all the bills were paid on time.

Do you mean you're paying these from Chase via Direct Debit and getting cashback?

No, I was paying them using my Chase card for cashback. I now pay most things on a 0% credit card and stooze the cash, as that earns me more than 1%. I avoid using direct debits wherever possible, except as a backup. Paying by card is more lucrative.
For those concerned that it is difficult, it really isn't. Some providers allow a continuous payment authority to be set up that works very similarly to direct debits. For others I can pre-load my account, or pay my bill at the same time as submitting a meter reading. Council Tax is the only one I've had to set a monthly reminder to pay manually each month (but always put this one on credit card due to the Chase exception).

This is strange, there is no cattery on exclusions list https://www.chase.co.uk/gb/en/legal/Cashback-Exclusions/
Yes which is why I assume the cattery are using some random code on their card machine.

I've found that they are quite willing to check items you think have been wrongly categorised, or explain which exclusion a transaction falls into if unclear. I've had them manually apply cashback a couple of times.
Seeing this I thought I would question it.
The response I got back was the merchant used an ineligible MCC code.  Didn’t elaborate what that code was and promptly closed the chat.

That's quite disappointing. My queries were very soon after the launch of the cashback scheme, so perhaps they were more willing to troubleshoot back then.

Despite the lack of cashback I still use Chase card for car and home insurance, saves me a hassle phoning to cancel automatic renewals if I don't want them.  My "spend" account balance is always £0, I top it up for purchases 1 minute in advance so there is no chance for insurance companies to collect any money unless I want them to.
Does it decline then? Or is there a danger of moving into an unarranged overdraft?
Yes.  They tried to collect money twice and both declined.  Shows on my statement as "declined".
